HUSKER WOMEN DROPPED BY TERPS:
Nebraska slumped from the start, falling behind 37-14 at the half on its way to a 69-54 women’s basketball loss to No. 11 Maryland at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday.
The Huskers (12-8, 4-5 Big Ten) went just 4-for-24 from the field in the first 20 minutes while losing the first-half turnover battle 14-2 against the Terrapins (16-4, 7-2 Big Ten). Maryland used the extra opportunities to outscore Nebraska 17-0 in points off turnovers in the half.
Jaz Shelley led Nebraska with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Sam Haiby and Annika Stewart just missed double-doubles for the Big Red.
Nebraska will take the midweek off from competition before returning to Big Ten road action at No. 10 Iowa on Saturday.
LOPER WOMEN WIN IN TOPEKA; MEN FALL TO WASHBURN:
Another split Saturday in Kansas for Loper basketball resulted in the UNK Women winning over Washburn while the men fell to the Ichabods.
The 16th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team got 14 points and 10 rebounds from both Klaire Kirsch and Shiloh McCool to get past Washburn, 55-51, Saturday afternoon. UNK is now 18-3 overall and 11-2 in MIAA play.
Junior guard Tyler Nelson scored a career-high 25 points and the last second three didn’t fall for Nebraska Kearney as the Washburn Ichabods posted a 65-62 win. The Lopers fell to 3-15 overall and 1-11 in conference action.
Both Loper squads will host Northwest Missouri State on Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center in Kearney.
HUSKER MEN DROP ROAD TEST AT PENN STATE SATURDAY:
The Huskers looked to continue their momentum on the road against Penn State after a big home win against Ohio State, but as the story has been all year, NU couldn’t get its second win in a row in Big Ten play, falling 76-65.
Penn State got out to a blazing start converting a four-point play and hitting two more threes to burst out to a 10-point lead.
Shortly after, disaster struck for Nebraska as starting guard Emmanuel Bandoumel went down with an apparent leg injury. Bandoumel was helped off the floor and would not return to the game.
Nebraska now moves to 10-10 on the year and 3-6 on the season.
UNK WRESTLING WIN ONE, DROP TWO AT MIDWEST DUALS:
The third-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team beat No. 23 Western Colorado, 23-16, and fell to both No. 17 Northern State, 22-20, and No. 8 Adams State, 21-18, Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.
The foursome of Nick James (141 lbs.), Austin Eldredge (174 lbs.), Billy Higgins (184 lbs.) and Lee Herrington (285 lbs.) went a combined 11-0 with four tech falls, three falls and a major.
UNK heads to NAIA defending national champ Grand View Friday in Des Moines.
STORM COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP OF LANCERS:
The Tri-City Storm completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Omaha Lancers in Saturday’s 5-3 victory at the Viaero Center. The Storm posted a 4-0 road shutout of the Lancers on Friday night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena.
Goalscorers for Tri-City were Daimon Gardner (2), Kieran Cebrian, Graham Gamache, and Tanner Adams. Goaltender Patriks Bērziņš picked up the win in goal for the Storm.
Tri-City will return to action on Thursday and Friday in back-to-back games against the Fargo Force at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas in the 2023 USHL Frosty Cup.
LOPER T&F WIN SIX EVENTS AT NORTHWEST OPEN:
The Nebraska Kearney track and field team won six events and had 12 national list efforts Saturday at the Northwest Missouri State Open in Maryville.
After winning two events last weekend, 800-meter defending national champion Wes Ferguson (Fremont) was at it again, taking the mile in 4:06.64.
Also taking Gold on the men’s side was the 4×4 squad (3:21.22), Ravenna redshirt sophomore Jack Drahota in the 60 hurdles (8.19) and Firth true freshman Tanner Cooper in the 800 (1:53.36).
The women saw Taylor redshirt junior Jordan Dockweiler take the shot put (44-9.75) with Kearney redshirt freshman Lily Novacek (57-2.75) leading the way in the weight throw.
UNK hosts the annual Charlie Foster Classic next Friday in Cushing Coliseum.
MAHOMES SUFFERS HIGH ANKLE SPRAIN:
Patrick Mahomes sustained a right high ankle sprain in the Kansas City Chiefs’ divisional playoff win over the Jaguars, a person familiar with the nature of the injury told The Associated Press on Sunday, though the All-Pro quarterback expects to play against Cincinnati in next week’s AFC championship game.
Mahomes was hurt late in the first quarter Saturday when a Jacksonville defender landed on him. X-rays taken during the game came back negative, and Mahomes returned after halftime to lead Kansas City to the 27-20 victory.
Mahomes underwent an MRI exam Sunday to better determine the extent of the injury. The tests showed no structural damage.
The Chiefs will face the Bengals, who beat the Bills 27-10 in their divisional game Sunday, in a rematch of last year’s AFC title game. Cincinnati rallied from an early 21-3 deficit for a 27-24 overtime victory and a spot in last year’s Super Bowl.
