HUSKER FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE COMMENTS:

KNIGHTON – NFL AS RECRUITING TOOL

New Nebraska Defensive line coach Terrance Knighton met with the media for the first time on Monday afternoon, and was asked how he uses his NFL experience on the recruiting trail…

The coach known as “Pot Roast” was a former pro, playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos before transitioning to coaching.

KNIGHTON – STILL SETTING UP NEW SCHEME:

Terrance Knighton, the new Nebraska Football defensive line coach, spoke to the media for the first time on Monday afternoon and said there are still some things to work out when it comes to the new defensive schemes…

Defensive Coordinator Tony White arrives from Syracuse where he ran a 3-3-5 system, but had stated he is open to transitioning to whatever can find success for the Blackshirts.

KNIGHTON – GETTING RIGHT PLAYERS TO BUY IN:

New defensive line coach for Nebraska Football Terrance Knighton addressed the media for the first time on Monday afternoon and spoke about what the expectations for the Big Red will be and how they find players to fit that mold…

Nebraska is currently over the scholarship roster by 25 student-athletes, but Matt Rhule and his staff continue to scout and recruit players for the 2023 class.

FOLEY – LOCAL RECRUITING IS WHAT OUR STAFF DOES:

Huskers’ Special Teams coordinator Ed Foley addressed the media for the first time Monday afternoon and was asked about his local recruiting that generated buzz amongst the state of Nebraska and its prep schools…

Foley traveled to around 75 different Nebraska high schools since the beginning of January, posting photos of his stops on his social media pages. Foley was in the Tri-Cities last week.

FOLEY – STATE HAS PASSION FOR HUSKER FOOTBALL:

Nebraska Football special teams coach Ed Foley spoke at his introductory press conference Monday afternoon about the eye-popping experience he’s had meeting local high school coaches from inside the state…

The Huskers’ new coordinator said his goal is to visit each Nebraska High School in the state by the end of his tenure with the Big Red.

FOLEY – WE ARE HERE TO RETURN KICKS:

Ed Foley, new Nebraska Football special teams coach, was asked about his philosophy in regards to the kickoff and punt return game, and what Husker fans should expect on Saturdays…

The Huskers had been stagnant in the return game since 2019, where the last return for a touchdown was with JD Spielman against South Alabama.

NEBRASKA MEN HEAD TO ILLINOIS FOR BIG TEN TILT:

The Nebraska men’s basketball team concludes a whirlwind month of travel on Tuesday, as the Huskers take on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Tipoff from the State Farm Center in Champaign is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be carried on BTN.

The Huskers have spent a good portion of January on the road, as Tuesday’s game at Illinois will be NU’s sixth Big Ten road game this month and wraps up a five-day road trip for the Huskers, who played at Maryland on Saturday and went straight to Champaign.

The Huskers (10-12, 3-8 Big Ten) look to snap a three-game losing streak after an 82-63 loss at Maryland on Sunday.

Illinois (15-6, 6-4 Big Ten) comes into Tuesday’s game winners of six of its last seven games following a 61-51 win at Wisconsin on Saturday.

STATE DUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCED:

The 2023 NSAA State Wrestling Dual Championship brackets were announced on Monday.

Eight teams qualify for the four classes across the state of Nebraska with teams competing at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds on Friday.

In Class A, Millard South claimed the top seed as North Platte entered at #4. Both Kearney and Columbus narrowly missed the top eight.

Cozad enters Class B as the top seed, as Hastings sits at #3 and Northwest at #7.

Class C has Broken Bow at #2 and St. Paul at #8.

Finally in Class D Anselmo-Merna is #2, Burwell is #5, and Cambridge is at #8. Full brackets and matchups can be found at the NSAA Website.

LOPER MEN MAKE UP CONTEST WITH GRIFFONS SCHEDULED:

The Nebraska Kearney/Missouri Western State men’s basketball game in St. Joseph has been rescheduled again.

The Lopers and Griffons will now meet on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.  Due to COVID protocols within the MWSU program, the original date of Dec. 8 was postponed with the teams agreeing to set the game on Monday, Feb. 27. However, the MIAA Tournament starts on March 1 in Kansas City with brackets needing to be set by Feb. 25.

UNK is coming off an 85-75 home win over Mo West this past Saturday. The Lopers head to nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma and Newman this weekend.

PURDUE REMAINS UNANIMOUS No. 1 IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Purdue became this season’s first unanimous No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday after wins over Michigan and Michigan State last week.

More than half of Top 25 teams lost, including second-ranked Alabama, which was routed by Oklahoma in the Big 12-SEC Challenge. That allowed Purdue to grab the remaining No. 1 votes and tighten its grip atop the poll, while Tennessee jumped two spots to second and Houston held onto third.

The Boilermakers (21-1) have won eight straight since a one-point loss to Rutgers on Jan. 2.

Virginia was sixth and Kansas State, which rebounded from a narrow loss at No. 13 Iowa State by pummeling Florida on Saturday, fell two spots to seventh; the Wildcats face eighth-ranked Kansas in a top-10 showdown tonight.

HUSKER T&F CLIMBS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS:

The Nebraska men’s track and field team continued its climb up the national rankings as it moved up four spots to No. 6 in the USTFCCCA National Track & Field Rankings released on Monday.

The last time the Husker men were ranked as high as sixth was in the 2015 preseason poll, and the NU men are on the verge of their first top-five ranking since 2013. Washington, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia make up the top five teams.

Meanwhile, the Nebraska women entered the USTFCCCA Rankings at No. 20 on Monday. The Huskers are the highest ranked Big Ten program in both the men’s and women’s national rankings this week.

The Huskers will host the 47th annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the Bob Devaney Sports Indoor Track this Friday and Saturday.
