TOMINAGA TIME FOR HUSKERS, DOWN PENN STATE:

Keisei Tominaga finished with a career-high 30 points, as Nebraska led nearly wire to wire in a 72-63 victory over Penn State Sunday afternoon in Lincoln.

Tominaga’s 30-point outburst – the first by a Husker since December of 2021 – was highlighted by 12-of-18 shooting, including a career-high five 3-pointers, as Nebraska (11-13, 4-9) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Freshman Jamarques Lawrence nearly posted a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Derrick Walker had nine points, a career-high seven assists and six boards, as Nebraska shot 52.9 percent from the field and committed a season-low seven turnovers.

Nebraska, which opened the game by hitting 10 of its first 14 shots, broke open a two-point game with an 11-0 run to build a 26-13 lead.

The Huskers hit the road again on Wednesday, Feb. 8 as Nebraska travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a matchup with the Wolverines. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m and the contest is covered on KGFW.

 

LOPER WOMEN TOP THE MIAA; MEN FALL TO NEWMAN:

The UNK Women laid claim to the top of the conference while the Loper men fell to another late scoring run in Wichita against Newman on Saturday.

Redshirt junior point guard Sarah Schmitt scored a career-high 26 points and redshirt junior forward Shiloh McCoolhad another double double as No. 12/17 Nebraska Kearney rolled past Newman, 73-46.

The Lopers (22-3, 15-2) have outscored its last three opponents by a combined tally of 249-145 to push its win streak to nine in a row. UNK also improves to 9-1 all-time against the Jets (6-15, 3-13) and is now in first place in the MIAA with Central Missouri’s loss to Missouri Southern. 

Stevie Smith scored 40 points and the Newman Jets went on a 17-0 run in the first half to down the Nebraska Kearney men, 84-74.

NU (7-15) takes the season series from UNK (4-18) with the Lopers now 2-2 all-time in Fugate Gym.

UNK hosts Central Missouri and Lincoln next weekend.

 

STORM DEFEAT STAMPEDE:

The Tri-City Storm defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede by a final score of 3-2 Sunday evening at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. 

Graham Gamache, Tanner Adams, and Dane Dowiak scored Tri-City’s goals in the victory. 

Sioux Falls scored twice during the 3rd period with an extra attacker on the ice, but was unable to force overtime. 

Tri-City will return to action with back-to-back home games against the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday, February 10th, and Saturday, February 11th.

 

STATE DUALS RESULTS:

The Nebraska State Wrestling Dual Championships concluded on Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds as area teams competed for a chance to earn their team a State Championship. 

In Class A, North Platte fell early as Millard South wrapped as the State Champion after downing Lincoln East. 

Class B had Cozad drop to fourth while Omaha Skutt Catholic earned the title. 

In Class C St. Paul ended third while Broken Bow claimed the State title, downing Battle Creek 56-15. 

Finally Class D had Aquinas Catholic cruising to their championship.

Full results can be found at the NSAA website. District wrestling meets take place across the state this weekend for athletes to claim their individual positions at the State meet in Omaha next weekend. 

 

UNK WRESTLING DOWNS UCM:

The third-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team used three forfeits and two bonus point wins to beat Central Missouri, 35-9, Saturday at the Health & Sports Center.

This was the 2022-23 home finale for the Lopers (11-6, 3-0). UNK is at No. 1 Central Oklahoma on Super Bowl Sunday with NCAA Regionals set for Feb. 25 in Chadron. The NCAA Championships are then March 10-11 in Cedar Rapids, Ia.

 

HUSKER WOMEN HOST NORTHWESTERN AT PBA:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Big Ten road action Monday when the Huskers take on Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.

Tip-off between the Big Red (13-9, 5-6 Big Ten) and the Wildcats (8-14, 1-10 Big Ten) is set for 6 p.m.

Nebraska is coming off a 71-67 win over Michigan State on Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. 

Coach Joe McKeown brings his 15th Northwestern team into Monday night’s game hungry for a second Big Ten win. The Wildcats are coming off a 74-64 loss at Penn State on Thursday, which followed their lone conference victory, a 70-67 win at Wisconsin (Jan. 29). Prior to the win over the Badgers, Northwestern was 0-9 in the league.

LOPER SOFTBALL FINISHES OPENING WEEKEND WITH THREE WINS:

Senior catcher Katie Gosker hit two home runs as the Nebraska Kearney softball team went 1-1 on day two of the Lubbock Sports College Classic Saturday in Texas.

UNK (3-1) downed Southwestern Oklahoma State, 2-1, and fell to 21st-ranked and tourney host Lubbock Christian, 7-1.

UNK heads to Colorado next weekend for a four-game series with Colorado-Colorado Springs.

 

LOPER T&F’s FERGUSON CONTINUES TO DOMINATE:

Redshirt sophomore Wes Ferguson broke his own school-record at 800-meters to lead Nebraska Kearney track and field this weekend in the Lincoln area.

Ferguson (Fremont), the defending indoor and outdoor 800 NCAA Division II national champ, won his event on Saturday at UNL by turning in a 1:49.04. That bests the 1:49.47 he ran at last year’s MIAA Championships and ranks second nationally behind CSU-Pueblo’s Reece Newell-Shaman (1:48.17). 

UNK heads to Topeka and Pittsburg next weekend.  

 

NEBRASKA WRESTLING TOPS PURDUE, ILLINOIS OVER WEEKEND:

Behind Silas Allred’s second-straight pin, the Nebraska wrestling team (9-3, 5-1 Big Ten) got its second win of the weekend with a 22-12 victory over Purdue (4-9, 0-6 Big Ten) on Saturday evening. 

The Huskers also took down a Top 25 Illinois squad on Friday night. 

Up next, the Huskers head to Columbus to face Ohio State in their last away dual of the year. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT and will be televised on BTN.
