RHULE – DEFINITELY A REBUILD:

Head Coach for Nebraska Football Matt Rhule joined KLIN in Lincoln and was asked how his first year at Nebraska compares to the other experiences he took over at Temple and Baylor…

The Huskers led the nation in one-score losses over the past five years with 23, compared to 19 tied by Iowa State and North Carolina. Nebraska Football is currently in winter conditioning and will kick off the Red-White Spring Game on April 22.

STORM ACQUIRE LANCER FORWARD IN TRADE:

The Tri-City Storm has acquired forward Alex Bump from the Omaha Lancers at the USA Hockey Trade and Drop Deadline. The Philadelphia Flyers draft pick is set to make his debut with the Storm this weekend.

Prior to yesterday’s trade deadline, the Tri-City Storm completed a transaction with the Omaha Lancers involving two players, seven draft picks, and future considerations. Tri-City has acquired forward Alex Bump and a 2023 Phase II 11th round draft pick from Omaha in exchange for forward Haden Kruse, a 2023 Phase II 2nd Round draft pick, a 2024 Phase II 2nd Round draft pick, a 2024 Phase I 4th Round draft pick, a 2023 Phase I 5th Round draft pick, a 2024 Phase II 5th Round draft pick, a 2023 Phase II 6th Round draft pick, and future considerations.

Alex Bump, 19, Forward, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, has netted nine goals and recorded seventeen assists in thirty-two games played this season for the Omaha Lancers. He was the team’s leading scorer prior to yesterday’s trade deadline.

HUSKER WOMEN CLOSE OUT NORTHWESTERN IN ROAD WIN:

It wasn’t pretty late, but Isabelle Bourne scored 18 points to lead four Huskers in double figures, as Nebraska built a 22-point second-half lead before holding on for a 78-66 win at Northwestern on Monday night.

Alexis Markowski notched her 11th double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Sam Haiby contributed 17 points and five rebounds to help the Huskers improve to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in the Big Ten with their second straight win and their third Big Ten road victory of the year.

Jaz Shelley also crossed the 1,000-point career scoring mark by finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots.

The Huskers return to Big Ten Conference home action on Thursday, when the Big Red take on Illinois. Tip-off between Nebraska and the Fighting Illini is set for 7 p.m.

STORM GOALTENDER NAMED GOALIE OF THE WEEK:

Tri-City Storm goaltender Cameron Korpi has been named the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Goaltender of the Week for the second time in his career following last weekend’s games.

Korpi backstopped the Storm to victory in consecutive road games against the Omaha Lancers and Sioux Falls Stampede.

The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked him as the 31st-best North American goalie prospect for the 2023 NHL Draft. Korpi previously announced a commitment to play collegiate hockey in the future at the University of Western Michigan.

LOPER SOCCER ADDS TWO DIVISION ONE TRANSFERS:

Nebraska Kearney women’s soccer head coach Rob Breton announced today that Katie Pagel and Rachel Warrick have transferred into the program and are going through winter workouts.

These are the first recruits to date for the Lopers who had a nine-member senior class in 2022. UNK will continue to add players this winter and spring.

Pagel (North Dakota State) is a 5-5 defender from Aurora, Colo., who has two years of eligibility remaining. Warrick prepped at Lincoln Southeast and is a 5-5 midfielder. She took a redshirt season at Drake this past fall. UNK soccer’s previous D1 transfers include Meaghan Pasbrig (UNLV) and Caitlin Rerucha (Western Illinois).

The Lopers spring season begins in March with the exhibition schedule to be announced.

HUSKER PUNTER CHANGES NUMBER TO HONOR BERRINGER:

Nebraska punter Brian Buschini will have a new jersey number next season to honor a former Husker.

Buschini will go from #95 to #18 to remember former NU quarterback Brook Berringer, who died in a plane crash in April 1996.

The junior made the announcement on Twitter Monday night.

Buschini averaged 44 yards per punt last season and had 14 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line after transferring in from Montana the prior season.

PURDUE REMAINS ATOP CBB POLL DESPITE UPSET LOSS:

Purdue’s unquestioned grip on No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll is gone after a weekend loss. That didn’t stop the Boilermakers from remaining at the top anyway.

The Boilermakers earned 38 of 62 first-place votes in the poll released Monday to remain at No. 1 for a third straight week and seventh time this season. Purdue was the unanimous choice last week, the first for any team this season, before falling at Indiana over the weekend for only its second loss.

The loss meant Houston collected 22 first-place votes as it rose one spot to No. 2, followed by No. 3 Alabama and No. 4 Arizona in each claiming one.

Texas jumped five spots to No. 5, shooting past Tennessee, which fell four spots to No. 6 after losing last week at Florida.

UCLA, Virginia, Kansas and Marquette rounded out the top 10, with Shaka Smart’s Golden Eagles cracking the top 10 for the first time since 2019.

NBA APPROVES SALE OF PHOENIX SUNS, MERCURY:

Mortgage executive and former Michigan State guard Mat Ishbia is the new majority owner of the Phoenix Suns and WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, after the NBA’s board of governors approved his plan to purchase the controlling stake of those franchises from Robert Sarver.

The league announced the approval Monday night, saying the transaction will be finalized later this week. The vote was 29-0, with the Cleveland Cavaliers abstaining.

Ishbia agreed on Dec. 20 to the deal, one that put the total value of the Suns and Mercury at $4 billion. Ishbia and his brother Justin said then that they would be acquiring more than 50% of the franchises, which includes the entirety of the embattled Sarver’s share as well as some holdings from minority partners.

Mat Ishbia will be the Suns’ governor, Justin Ishbia will be alternate governor. They now can assume those roles just days before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, and with the Suns squarely in the middle of the Western Conference playoff race.
