HUSKER MEN HANDLE MARYLAND IN OVERTIME:

Shorthanded? Sure. But the Huskers aren’t rolling over anytime soon.

Nebraska men’s basketball (14-14, 7-10 Big Ten) fought through suspect officiating and a 10-minute stretch with just one made basket to emerge victorious 70-66 over Maryland (18-9, 9-7 Big Ten) in overtime. The Huskers have won three in a row and four of their last five games.

With a chance to take the lead in overtime and inbounding in front of their own bench, Maryland’s inbounds pass was stolen by Sam Hoiberg and laid in to extend the lead. Hoiberg added two more free throws 17 seconds later, and Nebraska sent Maryland home with a loss just three days after the Terrapins beat No. 3 Purdue.

Derrick Walker scored a game-high 23 points to go with seven rebounds. Keisei Tominaga had 20, his fifth straight game of earning at least 20 points.

Nebraska stays home for the next two games, with Minnesota up first on Saturday.

HOIBERG – HUSKERS WIN WITH TOUGHNESS:

The Husker Men’s Basketball team continues to stay creative in their winning ways, earning a gritty overtime victory over Maryland at home on Sunday. In his postgame comments, Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said the win over the Terrapins was from the Huskers’ toughness…

Nebraska has been a tough-out for tournament teams or bubble watch squads, taking down Wisconsin in a 17 point overtime comeback last week, downing Penn State, and handing Maryland their ninth loss of the year Sunday.

SHRINE BOWL ROSTERS ANNOUNCED; BEARCATS PLACE TWO ON SOUTH TEAM:

The 65th Annual Shrine Bowl announced their rosters on Sunday for the North-South All-Star game set for Saturday, June 3 at UNK’s Ron and Carol Cope Stadium.

Kearney High School has several contributors to this year’s rosters, including record setting quarterback Treyven Beckman and receiver Jack Dahlgren. The Bearcats’ will also be assistants to the South coaching staff as KHS Head Coach Brandon Cool will be the Assistant Head Coach for the team, followed by assistants Darren Van Winkle and Kyle Peters.

Beckman broke eight passing records during his senior season at Kearney High School. He broke the single-season passing leader, touchdown leader, completions, passing yards in a game, yards per game, total offensive yards in a game, and passing touchdowns in a single game.

As one of Beckman’s favorite targets, Dahlgren excelled on the deep ball as one of the leaders in Class A in yards per reception. Dahlgren also had three touchdowns of over 20 yards during his senior season.

Full roster details for this year’s Shrine Bowl can be found here:

LOPER WOMEN OWN MIAA REGULAR SEASON TITLE:

The 10th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team got three triples from Megan Holt to rally past Pittsburg State, 70-67, Saturday evening in Kansas.

The Lopers (26-3, 19-2) win a 13th straight game and secure a share of its first league title in 19 years. During the win streak, seven of the wins have come by five points or less.

UNK can win the MIAA 2023 crow outright next Saturday afternoon with a win over rival Fort Hays State.

HUSKER WOMEN FALL AT HOME TO IOWA:

Nebraska drew a women’s basketball school-record crowd of 14,289, but the Huskers dropped an 80-60 decision to No. 7 Iowa on Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Jaz Shelley led Nebraska with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Alexis Markowski added 15 points and nine boards for the Huskers, who slipped to 14-13 overall and 6-10 in the Big Ten

Nebraska returns to Big Ten road action on Wednesday when the Huskers travel to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini.

UNK DROP AT PITTSBURG:

Pittsburg State junior wings Deshaun English II and Jeramy Shaw each scored 23 points to outlast Nebraska Kearney, 93-85, Saturday evening in Kansas.

With the win, the Gorillas (7-19, 4-16) split the season series with the Lopers (5-21, 3-17).

UNK heads to Missouri Western on Thursday for a makeup game delayed by COVID protocols in December.

HUSKER BASEBALL CONTINUES SLOW START WITH LOSSES IN SAN DIEGO:

Nebraska plated runs in the first six innings and held an 8-2 lead in the middle of the fifth but couldn’t hold on, as the Huskers suffered a 10-9 walk-off defeat in the bottom of the ninth at San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park.

The loss dropped the Huskers to 0-3 on the year.

The Huskers and Toreros wrap up this weekend’s four-game series with the series finale tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT at Fowler Park in San Diego. KGFW’s pregame begins at 1:30 PM.

LOPER SOFTBALL BEATS SOUTHWESTERN WITH TOPEKA TOURNEY NEXT:

Senior catcher Katie Gosker hit her 27th career home run and sophomore infielder Jaiden Harteker hit her first career dinger as Nebraska Kearney downed Southwestern Oklahoma State, 7-2, Sunday afternoon in the Oklahoma City area.

UNK (5-8) went 1-4 at the Raising Cane’s Festival this weekend, fall to Arkansas Tech, 12-3, and Southeastern Oklahoma State, 4-2, on Saturday.

UNK heads to Topeka next weekend for another tournament.

NEBRASKA WRESTLING EARNS WIN OVER ARIZONA STATE ON SENIOR DAY:

Behind a pin and two technical falls, the Nebraska wrestling team defeated Arizona State 25-15 on Senior Day.

Up next, NU is set to compete at the 2023 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., on March 4-5.

STENHOUSE JR. WINS LONGEST DAYTONA IN HISTORY:

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has had a rollercoaster career in which he had to fight to keep a job, lost his seat at a NASCAR powerhouse team and opened his 14th season mired in a five-year losing streak.

But it all came together for a dramatic win to start the season on Sunday.

Stenhouse won the Daytona 500 in double overtime and under caution on Sunday in the longest running of “The Great American Race.” The two overtimes pushed the 65th running of the race to a record 212 laps — a dozen laps beyond the scheduled distance and a whopping 530 miles.

The Cup Series races at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, next Sunday in the final race in the track’s current configuration.
