NEBRASKA BASKETBALL BEGINS BIG TEN TOURNEY:

The Nebraska men’s basketball team begins postseason play Wednesday night as the Huskers will take on Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Huskers are the No. 11 seed while Minnesota is the No. 14 seed.

NU’s game against the Golden Gophers is scheduled to begin 25 minutes following the matchup between No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 13 Ohio State.

The Huskers (16-15) come to Chicago with plenty of momentum following an 81-78 win at Iowa on Sunday. Nebraska has won five of its last six games down the stretch to get over the .500 mark.

Pregame is set for around 6:30 PM tonight on KGFW.

HUSKER BASEBALL BLASTS NORTHERN COLORADO; REMATCH TODAY:l

The Huskers have now homered in 10 consecutive games, which is the second longest streak since at least 1999. The Big Red went yard in 11 straight games in the 2004 season, totaling 16 homers in the 11-game stretch.

Nebraska (6-4-1) scored 12 runs on 13 hits without an error, while Northern Colorado (2-9) had one run on five hits and committed one error.

Nebraska and Northern Colorado wrap up the midweek series this afternoon, with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. at Hawks Field. KGFW’s pregame begins at 1:30 today.

WALKER HIGHLIGHTS HUSKERS WITH BIG TEN RECOGNITION:

A trio of Nebraska players were honored Tuesday morning as the Big Ten announced its all-conference selections from both the coaches and media.

Derrick Walker leads the trio, as he was a second-team selection by the Big Ten coaches, while the media listed the senior as an honorable-mention pick. Keisei Tominaga was named honorable mention by both the coaches and media, while Sam Griesel was Nebraska’s sportsmanship honoree.

Walker becomes the first Husker since 2018 to earn at least second-team honors, following a season where he leads the Huskers in scoring (13.7 ppg), rebounding (7.3 rpg), assists (3.8 apg), field goal percentage (.587) and blocked shots (0.7 bpg).

Tominaga earned his first Big Ten honor, as he enters the conference tournament averaging 12.8 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range. One of only two Huskers to play all 31 regular-season games, Tominaga leads NU in 3-pointers (64) and 3-point percentage (.403).

Griesel is honored for his contributions on and off the court. The senior was NU’s third-leading scorer (11.8 ppg) while dishing out 3.8 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game.

HUSKER BASKETBALL LEGEND ANDRE SMITH PASSES:

Former Husker men’s basketball great Andre Smith passed away over the weekend at the age of 64.

The Chicago, Ill., native was a three-year starter for Joe Cipriano and Moe Iba, helping the Huskers to three Big Eight Conference runner-up finishes in his career.

A two-time first-team All-Big Eight selection, Smith’s senior season was one of the best in school history. The 6-foot-7 forward was named the 1981 Big Eight Player of the Year, as he averaged 18.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Smith is one of only two conference players of the year in program history, while Smith also earned AP Honorable-Mention All-America honors in 1981.

Smith’s name is all over the Husker record books more than four decades following his collegiate career, as well as he is fourth on NU’s all-time scoring list with 1,717 points while he also ranks in the top-10 in school charts in career rebounds.

QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL STALLS; RAVENS’ JACKSON HIT WITH NON EXCLUSIVE TAG:

The Baltimore Ravens put the nonexclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson on Tuesday, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent this month but allowing him to negotiate with other teams.

The deadline for teams to apply the franchise tag was Tuesday. The Ravens were always expected to use it if they didn’t reach a long-term deal with Jackson first. The main question was whether they’d use the nonexclusive tag or the exclusive one.

Baltimore could have prevented Jackson from negotiating with anyone else by using the exclusive tag, but that could have cost significantly more. Instead, Jackson would make $32.4 million if he plays this season on the nonexclusive tag.

Before that happens, Jackson and the Ravens can keep negotiating, and other teams can join in the bidding as well. Baltimore would have a chance to match any agreement between Jackson and another team, and if the Ravens chose not to match, they’d receive two first-round draft picks in return.
