The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire west of Kearney Tuesday.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:56 p.m. Tuesday to a grass fire at 17th Rd and Sartoria Rd.

The fire was called in by a citizen with a legal burn permit.

According to KVFD administrator Jason Whalen, the winds had picked up the fire and went out of bounds into a nearby corn field.

Grass fire occurred on Tuesday afternoon. Kearney Volunteer fire department responded to a grass fire at just before 1pm (12:56pm) at 17th Rd and Sarotira.

The fire was called in by a citizen with a legal burn permit. According to KVFD Administrator Jason Whalen the winds had picked up the fire and gone out of bounds into a nearby corn field.

It’s estimated 40-60 acres were burned. The fire was brought under control after nearly an hour of the call.

No property damage was reported.

The Elm Creek Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene.
