HUSKER BASEBALL CLAIMS WIN No. 400 AT HAWKS FIELD; DOWN NDSU:
Will Walsh totaled a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings, and Brice Matthews delivered the go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh to lead Nebraska to a 4-1 win vs. North Dakota State at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park on Tuesday night.
Tuesday night’s win is Nebraska’s 400th all-time at Hawks Field, which has been the Huskers’ home ballpark since 2002.
Nebraska (14-8-1) scored four runs on five hits and an error, while the Bison (5-19) were limited to one run, three hits and a pair of errors.
Walsh collected his first collegiate victory while pitching a career-high seven innings. The Redshirt sophomore gave up one run on two hits, surrendering a leadoff single in the first and a two-out single in the fourth. Walsh’s 11 strikeouts are the most by a NU pitcher since Shay Schanaman tallied 11 vs. Maryland on April 11, 2021.
Nebraska hits the road this weekend, as the Huskers face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Abilene Christian in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 in Abilene, Texas.
HUSKER FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – RHULE:
RHULE – RECRUITS, ALUMS, FAMILIES, FANS ARE CURIOUS:
Nebraska Football Head Coach Matt Rhule invited many new and familiar faces onto campus last Saturday for the Huskers third practice of the spring season. Rhule says he wants to keep the Big Red’s doors open…
Nebraska aims to lock in on the 25 recruits who visited this past weekend, including Husker legacy and No. 1 overall player Dylan Raiola.
RHULE – HUSKERS KEEPING DETAILED THROUGH PRACTICE GRIND:
Matt Rhule addressed the media after Tuesday’s practice and said his team has withstood some of the early monotony with winter practices after their fifth practice…
Nebraska will continue spring sessions until the April 22 Red-White Spring game at Memorial Stadium.
RHULE – LESS SPOKESPEOPLE, MORE LEADERS:
Matt Rhule, Nebraska Football head coach spoke during his Tuesday morning presser about how his squad is led by actions instead of words…
The Huskers have allowed media access to specific practice sessions for videos, photos, and interviews – a change from the previous regimes for spring practices.
RHULE – RAHMIR JOHNSON PLAYING LOUD:
Rahmir Johnson took a step back from offensive responsibility last season for the Big Red, but Head Coach Matt Rhule still believes in the offensive weapon…
The Huskers’ Rahmir was the team leader in rushing yards for a running back in 2021, but failed to crack playing time spots last season under Scott Frost and Mickey Joseph.
RHULE – ROLLINS COULD BE MAKING MOVE:
Gray jerseys have been added to the Husker practice sessions for the spring, as head coach Matt Rhule explains and points out a new rising star repping the new color…
Rollins – a sophomore from Creighton Prep originally recruited as a tight end – could add some needed depth to defensive coordinator Tony White’s new 3-3-5 defense.
RHULE – O-LINE NUMBERS ARE NOT CONCERNING:
Matt Rhule, Husker Football Head Coach, told the media Tuesday morning not to worry about the low numbers for the offensive line – and spoke up about several walk-ons making an impact…
Rhule added that he’s happy with the progress made so far by returning offensive line coach Donovan Raiola, who was retained as the only assistant from Scott Frost’s staff.
SNOW ADJUSTS KEARNEY BEARCAT ATHLETICS SCHEDULES:
Kearney High Athletics will have several schedule adjustments for this week’s scheduled games.
Bearcat Girls Soccer had their home matchup with Columbus postponed to April 21. Meanwhile, the Boys Soccer team had their contest in Columbus postponed to a later date.
Kearney Baseball postponed Wednesday’s home matchup with Grand Island due to conditions at Memorial Field, also moving Thursday’s home game with Lincoln East to Den Hartog Field in Lincoln.
Track and Field has also moved their varsity track meets for the Girls at North Platte to Thursday, and the boys will travel to Columbus on Saturday instead of the previous planned Friday meets.
Full adjustments can be found at KGFW.com.
STORM SET FOR MORNING MATCHUP WITH STARS:
The Tri-City Storm is set for this morning’s road game against the Lincoln Stars at the Ice Box following last weekend’s three-game weekend sweep over the league-leading Fargo Force at the Viaero Center. The Storm can clinch a spot in the 2023 Clark Cup Playoffs with a win in today’s game. Puck drop is set for 11:00am CT.
Lincoln (31-18-3-1) leads Tri-City by two points for 3rd place in the USHL’s Western Conference standings entering today’s game at the Ice Box.
Today’s game is set to begin at 11:00am CT and will be streamed on FloHockey, and Storm Radio.
WALKER ADDED TO NABC ALL-STAR GAME:
Nebraska forward Derrick Walker Jr. has been selected to play in the Reese’s Division I College All-Star Game this weekend in Houston.
Walker is the seventh Husker to play or coach in the game and the first since James Palmer Jr. played in the 2019 event.
Walker, a 6-foot-9 forward, earned second-team All-Big Ten honors this season, leading Nebraska in scoring (13.6 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg), assists (3.9 apg), blocked shots (0.7 bpg) and field goal percentage (.584) in helping the Huskers to a 16-16 record.
Walker will be one of two Big Ten standouts playing for the East team and new Iona Coach Tobin Anderson. He is joined by Penn State’s Seth Lundy, while Rutgers’ Caleb McConnell will play for the West squad.
HUSKER SOFTBALL SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER IN IOWA CITY:
The Nebraska softball team (23-10, 3-1 Big Ten) fell to Iowa in game one of a doubleheader, 4-2.
In game two, four homers including two from Abbie Squier powered the Nebraska softball team (23-10, 4-1 Big Ten) past Iowa in game two of the Tuesday doubleheader in Iowa City. The Huskers ran past the Hawkeyes (21-13, 3-2 Big Ten), 9-3.
Squier was one of five Huskers to record two hits in the second game as the junior finished with five RBI. Billie Andrews and Brooke Andrews each added solo home runs while Sydney Gray and Katelyn Caneda finished with two hits as well.
The Huskers return to action this weekend, March 31-April 2 for a three-game series against Michigan at Bowlin Stadium.
COMMANDERS RECEIVE TWO BIDS FOR NEW OWNERSHIP:
Dan Snyder’s departure from the NFL is moving closer to reality.
A group led by Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales and another group led by Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos have formally submitted fully financed bids for the NFL’s Washington Commanders.
The Harris/Rales group includes basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta also has been in the running.
ESPN reported both bids came in at Snyder’s $6 billion asking price. Snyder had yet to accept an offer when the league’s finance committee met Monday so his future wasn’t openly discussed.
