Kearney entered the contest with only one blemish on their record, hoping to find a way to “punch up” against some of the top competition in Class A. The challenge presented itself against Lincoln Southwest, as the Silverhawks were 7-1 entering the contest and had only given up one goal the entire season in a loss to Lincoln East.
The Bearcats attempted to set the pace of play early, but Southwest controlled through most of the first half with a first strike score by the Silverhawks’ Charley Kort in the 18th minute.

Southwest would have a lucky bounce go their way, as in the 24th minute goal keeper Alexa Gobel launched a boot from her goal towards Kadi Ecklund, the protector for Kearney. As the high wind pushed the ball to the opposite end of the field, an untimely bounce went over Ecklund’s head and into the goal for the second score the day.
The Bearcats surrendered the third goal of the day in the 32nd minute to Kianna Perez, as Kearney trailed 3-0.
Harley Straka had Kearney back in the game quickly, sending a mad dash to the goal before being knocked down and receiving a penalty kick opportunity. Straka swiped in the shot, making the contest a 3-1 game heading into halftime after her 33′ goal.
