KEARNEY – The Kearney Bearcats gave up a goal in both halves, dropping their final home contest of the regular season 2-0 to the visiting Columbus Discoverers Friday evening. Click here to listen to the broadcast replay.

The Bearcats entered at 9-3 on the year with Columbus at 7-5. Kearney had not traveled all week, having hosted the HAC Silver Bracket Tournament at KHS. Kearney took down Lincoln North Star 4-0 on Monday, but fell to Lincoln Southeast 1-0 Wednesday.

Kearney was hoping to position themselves into a better powerpoint seeding with a victory, while Columbus aimed to earn their head coach – Kearney High alum Zach Wayman – a homecoming victory.

Discoverer freshman Molly Goc earned the first score of the contest off a long throw-in inside the six that ended off a header from Goc for a Columbus lead in the 16th minute.

Kearney had more shot opportunities in the contest but were off the mark throughout the evening. Maddy Province and Delaney Junker had shots go off the top post of the goal in the second half, as Kearney could not tie the game.

In the final five minutes, Abby Haynes of Columbus sealed the game with a 75th minute goal.

The Bearcats (9-4) wrap up their regular season on Tuesday traveling to ultra-talented Lincoln East.
