WHITE TEAM WINS OVER RED IN HUSKER SPRING GAME:

The White team jumped to a 21-point first-half lead and never looked back in a 21-7 victory in the annual Red-White Spring Game in front of 66,045 fans on a blustery Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback Jeff Sims led an efficient attack for the White squad early in the game, completing 8-of-10 passes for 139 yards, while adding six carries for seven yards, including a seven-yard touchdown run.

Running back Gabe Ervin Jr. added a seven-yard touchdown run of his own for the White team. Ervin finished his day with eight carries for 20 yards. Fellow running back Rahmir Johnson led all rushers with 35 yards on six carries in the game, while Anthony Grant added 34 yards on 14 carries for the White team.

Marcus Washington was the game’s leading receiver with three receptions for 42 yards, while Billy Kemp IV and tight end Nate Boerkircher both added 39 receiving yards on a pair of catches.

Nebraska now awaits the start of their season on Thursday, August 31 taking on Minnesota on the road.

HUSKER FOOTBALL SPRING GAME COMMENTS:

RHULE – EXCITED FOR PROGRESS OF HUSKERS:

Matt Rhule, Nebraska Football Head Coach, spoke on his thoughts coming out of Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game…

Rhule and the Big Red have some trimming to do, as the current roster is set about 13 scholarships above the NCAA limit. Nebraska must get to 85 rostered scholarship players before fall camp.

RHULE – SIMS IS A PASSER:

Nebraska Football Head Coach Matt Rhule was pleased with the performance of his transfer quarterback Jeff Sims, saying that Sims is more than just an athlete behind center…

The Huskers have six scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, including three with former starting experience for the Big Red and Sims who arrived after starting at Georgia Tech.

RHULE – NO EXCUSE FOR OFFENSIVE FUMBLES:

The biggest takeaway from the Red-White Spring Game on Saturday for head coach Matt Rhule was the number of turnovers given away by both offenses…

Rhule added that the focus in fall camp will be to prevent turnovers, but added he was happy with the offense’s overall demenaor.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL NAMES LOCKER ROOM AFTER SOLICH:

The Nebraska football locker room in the Go Big facility will carry the name of former Cornhusker head coach and standout fullback Frank Solich. The naming of the facility in Solich’s honor was announced publicly at halftime of Saturday’s spring game at Memorial Stadium.

Solich was a part of Bob Devaney’s first recruiting class at Nebraska in the early 1960s and lettered as a fullback from 1963 to 1965. After a successful high school coaching career in Nebraska, Solich served on Tom Osborne’s coaching staff from 1979 to 1997, the last 15 of those seasons as running backs coach. In that role he helped Nebraska to three national championships, 11 conference titles and numerous NCAA rushing titles.

Solich succeeded Osborne as Nebraska head coach following the 1997 season. In six seasons leading the Nebraska program, Solich posted a 58-19 record, won the 1999 Big 12 Championship, and guided the Huskers to the 2001 BCS National Championship Game. Following his career at Nebraska, Solich led Ohio University to 115 wins in 16 seasons as head coach.

LOPER FOOTBALL DEFENSE TAKES WIN IN SPRING GAME:

The Nebraska-Kearney defense made a last-minute stop to get past the Loper offense, 33-30, Saturday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The annual “Spring Game” capped official workouts; NCAA teams are allotted 15 practices over a 30-day period. The offense, wearing Blue & Gold, tallied points via a touchdown (six), field goal (three) and PAT (one) with the defense, in Blue & White, getting on the scoreboard with a turnover (four), three-and-out (three), stop (two) or sack (one).

UNK begins fall workouts in August with the 2023 opener set for Thursday, Aug. 31, at Central Oklahoma.

LOPER FOOTBALL SPRING GAME COMMENTS:

HELD – THOUGHTS FROM SPRING GAME:

UNK Football coach Ryan Held was encouraged with both sides of the ball after Saturday’s UNK Spring game, despite some missed opportunities from the special teams…

The special teams was the lone detriment, missing three field goals and an extra point. The Blue and White defense earned the win Saturday 33-30.

HELD – WETOVICK CONTINUES TO IMPROVE:

UNK Football Head Coach Ryan Held had high attention for Cozad redshirt freshman Nolan Wetovick after the defense’s  win in the UNK Spring Game…

The former Haymaker had nine tackles and the game’s lone interception.

DAVIS – NOT JUST A RUNNER:

UNK Football quarterback TJ Davis really liked the change in tempo in this year’s spring game, saying that he’s out to prove he’s not a one dimensional player…

Davis went 14-23 passing with 204 yards and a 32-yd TD pass. The Super Senior also ran for 32 yards.

HUSKER BASEBALL SWEPT IN IOWA CITY:

Nebraska fell 6-1 in the series finale at Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Huskers (21-14-1, 7-5 Big Ten) scored one run on four hits, while the Hawkeyes (29-10, 7-5 Big Ten) totaled six runs on 10 hits and two errors.

STORM TAKE WEEKEND SWEEP OVER STARS:

The Tri-City Storm completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Lincoln Stars Saturday night at the Viaero Center to close out play in the 2022-2023 regular season.

The Storm will now host the Sioux City Musketeers in a Best-Of-Three series in the opening round of the 2023 Clark Cup Playoffs at the Viaero Center. Tri-City will host Game #1 on Monday, Game #2 on Tuesday, and if necessary, Game #3 on Wednesday in Kearney.

Puck drop for all three first round playoff games is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL CLAIMS SERIES WIN OVER WISCONSIN:

The Nebraska softball team (32-14, 12-5 Big Ten) claimed the series victory against Wisconsin (23-16, 8-7 Big Ten) with a 2-1 win over the Badgers on Sunday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers return to action next weekend, April 28-30, for a three-game series against Northwestern in Evanston.

LOPER WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM HAS THREE ON ALL-MIAA TEAM:

Super senior Faviola Gonzalez, junior Allison Comer and sophomore Juliana Botero Molina represent Nebraska-Kearney on the 2023 All-MIAA women’s golf team.

Each Loper was chosen honorable mention and this is the first time UNK has had three All-MIAA picks in one year. Both Gonzalez (Puerto Rico) and Botero Molina (Colombia) are repeat selections with Comer (Overland Park, Kan.) tabbed for the first time.
