KEARNEY BASEBALL HOSTS BELLEVUE EAST TO BEGIN FINAL STRETCH:

The Kearney Baseball team is ready for the final stretch of their season, beginning a long homestand today facing Bellevue East at Memorial Field.

Kearney (9-11) is on a three game winning streak and seeks to continue their recent home success against the Chieftains (12-12) who are coming off a home loss to Omaha Westside on Monday.

KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 3:45 PM with first pitch at 4 PM and Austin Jacobsen on the call. Hear Kearney Baseball on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

HUSKER BASEBALL SET TO BATTLE OMAHA:

Nebraska is set for midweek matchups against Omaha and South Dakota State this week.

The Huskers travel to Omaha to take on the Mavericks tonight to Tal Anderson Field at 7 PM. KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at the conclusion of the Kearney Baseball matchup with Bellevue East.

Nebraska and Omaha meet for the third time this season after the Mavericks came away with a pair of victories in the first two games between the two in-state foes in Lincoln.

Since Omaha’s transition to DI, the Huskers have won 11 of the 16 meetings against the Mavericks.

STORM FACE GAME TWO MATCHUP WITH SIOUX CITY:

The Tri-City Storm is set to host the Sioux City Musketeers tonight at the Viaero Center for Game #2 of the team’s 1st Round Best-Of-Three series.

The Storm defeated the Musketeers by a final score of 6-1 last night to take a 1-0 series lead. A win on home ice tonight in Game #2 would send the Storm to the Western Conference Semifinals round of the Clark Cup Playoffs.

Puck drop for the matchup is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.

TORRES FIRST TO HIT PORTAL FOR HUSKERS:

Richard Torres will see his career at Nebraska come to an end without having taken a snap in a regular season game.

Torres, a redshirt freshman quarterback, announced on Tuesday morning that he is entering the transfer portal.

Torres is one of six scholarship quarterbacks on the Huskers’ roster alongside Jeff Sims, Casey Thompson, Heinrich Haarberg, Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers. He did not play in a game as a true freshman in 2022.

Torres, who did not participate in last year’s spring game while dealing with an injury, played in Saturday’s annual Red-White Spring Game and finished 9-of-18 for 66 yards with an interception.

Torres’ departure leaves five scholarship quarterbacks and 97 total scholarships on the Huskers’ roster.

BIG RED FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ADDS ANOTHER FRIDAY MATCHUP:

The Big Ten Conference announced Monday afternoon that Nebraska’s game at Illinois will now take place on Friday, Oct. 6.  The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, but the contest was selected by the conference and its television partners for a Friday kickoff.

It marks the second straight year that Nebraska will play in multiple Friday contests, including the annual Black Friday matchup with Iowa on Nov. 24. Last year, NU went 2-0 in Friday games with road wins at Rutgers (14-13) and at Iowa (24-17).

It will be the second time that the NU-Illinois matchup will be played on Friday since Nebraska joined the Big Ten, as the 2017 matchup in Champaign – a 28-6 Husker win – was a Friday night matchup.

HUSKER MEN’S HOOPS ANNOUNCES CONFERENCE MATCHUPS:

Nebraska men’s basketball will host Big Ten regular-season and tournament champion Purdue next season at Pinnacle Bank Arena, as well as four other NCAA Tournament teams, as the Big Ten announced its 2023-24 single and double-play opponents Tuesday morning.

Nebraska’s single-play home games for 2023-24 are Michigan State, Penn State and Purdue, while the Huskers’ single-play road games are Illinois, Iowa and Maryland. NU will face the other seven teams (Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rutgers and Wisconsin) twice during the 2023-24 campaign.

In total, the Huskers will host five Big Ten teams that made the NCAA Tournament: the reigning champion Boilermakers, Big Ten Tournament runner-up Penn State, Sweet 16 participant Michigan State, as well as Indiana and Northwestern.

RODGERS FINALLY TRADED TO JETS; PACKERS RECEIVE MULTIPLE PICKS:

After six weeks of waiting, Aaron Rodgers is leaving behind his brilliant legacy in Green Bay and heading to the bright lights — and massive expectations — of the Big Apple.

The New York Jets agreed on a deal Monday to acquire the four-time NFL MVP from the Packers.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said at a pre-draft news conference that the deal hasn’t been finalized, but should be completed before the draft begins Thursday.

The Jets will receive Rodgers, the No. 15 overall pick and a fifth-rounder this year from the Packers, according to another person with knowledge of the trade. In exchange, Green Bay will get the 13th overall selection, a second-rounder (No. 42) and a sixth-rounder this year and a conditional 2024 second-round pick that can become a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65% of plays for New York this season.
