ARCHER ENDS KEARNEY CAREER WITH BEARCATS AS A-6 RUNNER UP:

Despite an upset in the semifinal round of the A-6 District Tournament over Bellevue West, Kearney Baseball wrapped their season at Papillion-LaVista South as the Titans claimed the district title winning 5-2.

The loss ends Kearney’s season at 14-14 overall and as district runner-up. The Bearcats’ lone head coach in program history Brad Archer will now officially retire for Kearney, as previously announced in March. Matt Connot will replace Archer next season as head coach.

The Legion Baseball season begins in the last week of May.

HUSKER BASEBALL CRUSHED BY MARYLAND IN SERIES FINALE:

Max Anderson slugged his 36th career home run to move into a tie for eighth all-time in program history, as the Huskers fell 20-5 in the series finale at No. 23 Maryland on Sunday afternoon in College Park, Md.

Nebraska (25-19-1, 10-8 Big Ten) recorded five runs and nine hits, while Maryland (33-16, 13-5 Big Ten) totaled 20 runs on 20 hits.

The Huskers did pull off an upset Saturday to avoid a series sweep, keeping the Huskers in the Big Ten standings tied for fifth and a half game out of ninth place.

Nebraska returns to action with a pair of games at Creighton on Tuesday in Omaha. The Huskers and Bluejays will resume last month’s suspended game at 5 p.m. Following the completion of the suspended game, the two teams will meet in the series finale scheduled for 7:03 p.m.

FORMER HUSKER TORRES SELECTS INCARNATE WORD:

Former Husker quarterback Richard Torres announced his new college home on Sunday, committing to Incarnate Word.

The FCS program is in San Antonio, which is home base to Torres. The QB entered the transfer portal on April 25 after one year in Nebraska’s program with four years still to play.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Torres signed with Nebraska in the 2022 class after a productive career in the San Antonio area. Torres suffered a knee injury that cut his senior season short. He threw for 912 yards and 12 touchdowns in four games, while rushing 14 times for 76 yards and one touchdown.

During his recruitment, Torres picked the Huskers in June of that cycle, choosing the Big Red over Kansas State, San Diego State, UNLV and others.

WISNER-PILGER ATHLETE PASSES AFTER COLLAPSE:

Hunter Palmer, an 18-year-old high school senior attending Wisner-Pilger Schools, has died, according to a release from the school as first reported by KSNB.

While the school does not confirm the date of Palmer’s death in the release, Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner says he passed away Friday at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point.

According to a report from the Wayne Daily News, Palmer collapsed at a track meet. The Gators most recently competed Thursday at Norfolk Catholic, according to the school’s activities calendar and statistics posted to athletic.net.

Palmer was a standout multi-sport student-athlete for the Gators who was committed to play college football for Midland University in Fremont.

LOPER T&F COMPLETES MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Junior Wes Ferguson defended his 800-meter title, true freshman Brianna Russell won the high jump, senior Brayden Sorensen broke his own school-record and junior Ben Arens had another runner up finish Sunday at the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships in Jefferson City, Mo.

The three-day meet began Friday afternoon and wrapped up on Sunday evening. Both Loper teams came in nationally-ranked and both finished eighth, the men tallying 63.50 points and the women 52.0.

Select Lopers will take part in the Concordia and Loper Twilight meets this weekend.

BIG RED SOFTBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE; EARNS No. 4 SEED IN TOURNEY:

The Nebraska softball team dropped its final regular season game with a 6-4 loss to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers (33-19, 13-10 Big Ten) tallied 11 hits and four runs and were led by Abbie Squier, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. The Buckeyes (32-19, 12-11 Big Ten) recorded nine hits and six runs while McKenzie Bump and Mariah Rodriguez each added two hits.

On Sunday afternoon, Nebraska earned the No. 4 seed for this week’s Big Ten Softball Tournament and will face the winner of No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 12 Illinois on Thursday, May 11, at 7 p.m. (CT) on the Big Ten Network. The 2023 Big Ten Tournament is being hosted by the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill., and the single-elimination event runs from Wednesday to Saturday (May 10-13).

Every game of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Nebraska won the Big Ten Tourney last season.
