RAIOLA VERBALLY COMMITS TO GEORGIA:

Dylan Raiola’s Nebraska recruitment is over and done with.

The five-star quarterback and No. 1 overall player in the country has committed to Georgia. He announced the decision on Instagram and Twitter on Monday morning.

Nebraska made a strong, consistent all-out effort to land Raiola, but he will continue his extremely bright career in the SEC, choosing the Bulldogs over the Huskers, USC and Oregon among others.

CHANGES COMING TO HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL FOUL PROCEDURES:

Beginning next year, high school basketball teams will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus.” This change eliminates the one-and-one scenario and sets new foul limits each quarter for awarding the bonus free throw.

Rules changes were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its annual meeting in April.

In addition to awarding two foul shots for all common fouls, teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five fouls in each quarter and team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. Previously, teams were awarded the one-and-one bonus when their opponents committed seven fouls in a half and two foul shots when 10 fouls were committed each half.

This change will take place to start the 2023-24 season for all classes across the state of Nebraska.

LOPER WOMEN’S GOLF BEGINS NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The 56th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women’s golf team starts play at the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships today in Eureka, Mo.

The 18-team field will play a 54-hole tournament at the par 72 Fox Run G.C. (6,187 yards). The top eight teams after stroke play advance to a match play bracket (seeds 1-8) with the National Champion being crowned Saturday (May 20).

Rain is in the forecast for Tuesday so action may be delayed. All participants took part in a practice round on Monday.

LEXINGTON NAMES BURSON NEXT LEADER OF MINUTEMEN WRESTLING:

Lexington High School announced the hiring of Mark Burson as the next leader of the Minutemen wrestling team Monday, first reported by KSNB.

He began in 2008 when he joined the staff as a middle school assistant. His commitment and passion for coaching quickly earned him recognition, and in 2010, he was promoted to the position of varsity assistant for boys wrestling.

Burson has also served as a varsity assistant for various other sports including football and track.

HUSKER T&F VOTED INTO TOP TEN:

The Nebraska men’s track and field team moved up eight spots to No. 6 in the USTFCCCA Rankings on Monday.

The No. 6 ranking matches the Huskers’ highest ranking this outdoor season. Nebraska won the Big Ten outdoor team championship on Sunday with 151 points, their most at a conference meet since 2004.

The NU women are ranked No. 12 in the nation. The Huskers finished third at the Big Ten meet with 112 points, which was their most points ever at a Big Ten meet. It was also their best Big Ten outdoor finish since placing third in 2016.

Both the men and women are the highest ranked teams in the Midwest Region and in the Big Ten.

OAKLAND A’s REACH AGREEMENT FOR STADIUM SITE ON VEGAS STRIP:

The Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement with Bally’s and Gaming & Leisure Properties to build a potential stadium on the Tropicana hotel site along the Las Vegas Strip.

Bally’s Corp. made the announcement Monday for a 30,000-seat stadium on the 35-acre site. The project is expected to cost about $1.5 billion, and the A’s are asking for nearly $400 million in public support from the Nevada Legislature, which could vote on a proposal this week.
