NEBRASKA BASEBALL DROPS EARLY LEAD TO PURDUE:

Nebraska held a 3-0 lead in the fourth until Purdue plated seven unanswered runs in the Huskers’ 7-3 setback at Purdue on Friday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.

Nebraska (30-21-1, 14-9 Big Ten) scored three runs on nine hits and an error, while Purdue (24-28, 11-12 Big Ten) had seven runs on 11 hits.

Nebraska and Purdue conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT at Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Ind.

 

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL BEGINS NCAA TOURNAMENT IN STILLWATER:

The Nebraska softball team (34-20) travels to Stillwater, Okla. for the NCAA Regionals. This marks the second-consecutive season that the Huskers reached the NCAA Tournament and the 26th appearance in program history. NU will take on No. 21 Wichita State today. 

Sixth-seeded Oklahoma State, who holds a No. 9 ranking in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll, hosts UMBC as that contest is currently in action. 

Today’s game will have a delayed start due to inclement weather in the area. KGFW will broadcast Sports Nightly from 6 PM – 8 PM tonight. 

 

DAHLGREN STATE CHAMP; KHS ENDS STATE T&F IN FIFTH, 20th; C & D BEGIN:

Jack Dahlgren earned a state gold medal in the 300 M hurdles on Thursday, capping a day in which he had already claimed a runner-up finish in the 110 M hurdles, as he aided the Kearney Boys T&F team to a fifth place finish in Day 2 at the State Championships in Omaha. 

The Kearney girls wrapped up in 20th overall with twelve total points. 

Classes C & D began their action today. Running events are currently ongoing, as field events have wrapped for the day. Find more on local athletes results at KGFW.com.

 

LOPER WOMEN’S GOLF ENDS 13th AT NATIONALS:

The 56th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women’s golf team shot the second lowest 54-hole score (917) in school history to finish 13th at the NCAA Division II Championships Thursday in Eureka, Mo.

The top eight teams after 54 holes move on to a match-play bracket with the national champion crowned on Saturday.

The Lopers had efforts of 303, 306 and 308 to come in ahead of five teams including 14th-ranked Limestone (S.C.), 26th-ranked and home standing Missouri-St. Louis and 41st-ranked and region rival Augustana. The 917 trails only the 866 UNK carded at the NCAA Central Regional last week in Iowa. 

The Lopers will tee it up again in September.

 

LOPER MBB SIGNEE TO PARTICIPATE IN VEGAS ALL-STAR GAME:

Nebraska Kearney men’s basketball signee Trey Deveaux will take part in the 11th annual National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Star game this weekend in Las Vegas.

Deveaux (Lincoln, Neb./Norris H.S.) starred at Central C.C. in Columbus the past two years. The NJCAA first-team Division II All-American is a member of the “North All-Stars” which features players hailing from Florida, Georgia and New York junior and community colleges.

 

UNK MEN’S HOOPS ADD ANOTHER TALENTED TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL STAR:

Nebraska Kearney head men’s basketball coach Kevin Lofton announced today that Bryson Goldsmith will suit up for the Lopers next season.

The 6-2, 175-pound combination guard is from El Paso and regarded as one of the top prep players in the State of Texas this season.

Scoring over 1,000 points in his career, he was selected MVP of District 1-5A this past season as well as being tabbed the El Paso Times City Player of the Year. Averaging around 19 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 and a steal per game, Goldsmith also was named TABC Class 5A all-state team.

 

FOUR NEBRASKA SOFTBALL PLAYERS NAMED ALL-REGION:

Four Nebraska softball players were named to an All-Midwest Region team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Thursday.

Billie Andrews was named to the all-region first team, Brooke Andrews and Mya Felder received second-team honors while Katelyn Caneda was named to the third team. 

Nebraska has produced 103 all-region honorees in school history, a total that ranks third in the Big Ten. 

 

HUSKER T&F EARN 56 REGIONAL BIDS:

The Nebraska track and field team earned 56 bids to the NCAA West Preliminary Round, set for May 24-27 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. 

The Huskers’ 56 entries at next week’s regional meet are the most for the program since 2010. The NU men earned 29 regional bids, while the women collected 27.
