HUSKER SOFTBALL ENDS REGIONAL RUN IN STILLWATER:

The Nebraska softball team’s season came to end on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Stillwater Regional Final, falling to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 5-2.

The Cowgirls (44-14) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to advance to NCAA Super Regionals. OSU’s offense was led by Tallen Edwards who finished 2-for-3 with one RBI while Rachel Becker added a two-run double.

Courtney Wallace had the best offensive performance of her career in her final appearance as a Husker. The fifth-year senior went 4-for-4 with one run. Sydney Gray added two hits while NU out-hit Oklahoma State 9-7.

The Huskers finished the season with a 36-22 record.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL CLAIMS SERIES WIN OVER PURDUE; EARNS FOUR SEED IN BIG TEN TOURNEY:

Max Anderson became the first player in Big Ten history to hit 15 home runs in conference play, as the Huskers clinched the road series at Purdue with a 6-4 win on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.

With home runs by Anderson and Charlie Fischer, the Big Red stretched its single-season home run record to 95 this season.

Nebraska (31-21-1, 15-9 Big Ten) scored six runs on six hits and two errors, while Purdue (24-29, 11-13 Big Ten) had four runs on 11 hits and an error.

Nebraska has also claimed the No. 4 seed in this week’s Big Ten Baseball Tournament at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

The Huskers take on fifth-seeded Rutgers on Wednesday, May 24 at 2 p.m.

The winner of No. 4 Nebraska and No. 5 Rutgers advances to take on the winner of No. 1 Maryland and No. 8 Michigan State on Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m., while the losers face off in an elimination game on Thursday, May 26 at 10 a.m.

All Nebraska Baseball contests will be broadcasted on KGFW.

KEARNEY CATHOLIC’S ONNEN EARNS GOLD MEDAL, GIRLS RUNNER-UP AT STATE TRACK:

The Kearney Catholic girls track and field team nearly pushed through in their final meet of the season, ultimately ending as Class C State Track & Field Runner-Up with 40.33 points – tying them at 2nd with Chase County and coming shy of Bishop Neumann’s 43 points.

The Stars’ freshman Alyssa Onnen claimed a gold medal in the pole vault, clearing 12-04.00. She was also the runner-up in the Long Jump (18-5.00) and Triple Jump (37-05.00). Other point earners included Payton Dzingle’s 5th in the 400 M dash, Margaret Haarberg’s runner-up finish in the high jump, and the 4×100 M relay ending in 5th.

Kearney Catholic’s boys ended tied for 30th. Full Stars’ athletes results can be found here.

ANDERSON, MATTHEWS AMONG SEMIFINALISTS FOR HOWSER TROPHY:

Juniors Max Anderson and Brice Matthews were two of the 60 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, awarded annually to the top college baseball player in the country in conjunction with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce.

Nebraska is one of 13 programs in the nation with multiple players on the list.

Anderson is having a breakout 2023 junior campaign, batting .408 with 19 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 68 RBI and 48 runs.

Matthews is batting .380 with 11 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 65 RBI and 61 runs scored this season.

The finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 8.

BELLEVUE WEST QUARTERBACK DROPS MISSOURI, COMMITS TO HUSKERS OVER WEEKEND:

Matt Rhule and the Huskers have a young gunslinger: Class of 2024 in-state quarterback Daniel Kaelin has committed to Nebraska.

Kaelin, who had been committed to Missouri since March 13, decommitted from the Tigers on Friday. But he didn’t wait too long to make his longtime wish known, committing to the Huskers on Saturday morning via his social media pages.

Nebraska was hot and heavy in their pursuit of No. 1 overall QB Dylan Raiola, ultimately having Kaelin select Missouri at his initial commitment. As the top quarterback selected Georgia last week, Rhule and company pivoted back to Kaelin who joined the 2024 class immediately.

With Kaelin in the fold, the Huskers have avoided going two straight recruiting cycles without signing a high school quarterback. The Huskers now have seven commits in their 2024 class.

KOEPKA DELIVERS WIN IN PGA:

Four years removed from capturing his last major championship, Brooks Koepka stood victorious at one of the sport’s premier tournaments winning the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club by two strokes over Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler.

Koepka scored consecutive 4-under 66s to storm to the top of the star-studded field over the weekend, adding a 67 on Sunday to join Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the third golfer to win three or more PGA Championships in the stroke-play era.

The victory is first for Koepka (-9) at a major since the 2019 PGA Championship.
