The Legion Baseball season begins tonight for the Runza Seniors of Kearney as they travel to North Platte at Bill Wood Field to take on North Platte FNBO.

FOUR HUSKERS EARN ALL-BIG TEN RECOGNITION:
Nebraska’s Max Anderson, Brice Matthews, Gabe Swansen and Shay Schanaman received All-Big Ten honors.
Anderson and Matthews were first-team selections, while Swansen and Schanaman were second-team and third-team honorees, respectively. Anderson was one of two unanimous first-team selections, joining Michigan State’s Brock Vrandenburg.
Nebraska opens Big Ten play on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against fifth-seeded Rutgers at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
STUCKEY NAMED KEN JONES AWARD FINALIST:
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletes Association announced its five female and five male finalists for the 2022-23 Ken B. Jones Award. The Ken B. Jones Award recognizes the Association’s top female and male student-athletes from the academic year.
UNK’s Luke Stuckey (Distance runner – UNK T&F) was nominated as a male finalist for this year’s ballot. Other male finalists are wrestler Dalton Abney (Central Oklahoma), soccer player Ryan McCully (Northeastern State), distance runner Matthew Oglesby (Pitt State), pole vaulter Ryan Stanley (Fort Hays).
UNK’s Matt Malcom (wrestling) won the 2021-22 award, the first Loper to do so.

Nebraska fans have an opportunity to be a part of the 100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium in 2023 by purchasing a Through These Gates Mini Plan.
The three-game ticket packages are on sale beginning today at 10 a.m. by visiting //Huskers.com/tickets or by calling or visiting the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office.
The Through These Gates Mini Plan is priced at $100 to celebrate a century of football at Memorial Stadium. The ticket plan includes a ticket to non-conference games against Northern Illinois (Sept. 16) and Louisiana Tech (Sept. 23), and one of five Big Ten home games while supplies last. The Huskers’ Big Ten conference home schedule includes matchups with Michigan (Sept. 30), Northwestern (Oct. 21), Purdue (Oct. 28), Maryland (Nov. 11) and Iowa (Friday, Nov. 24).
Nebraska opens Coach Matt Rhule’s first season as head coach with a pair of road games beginning Thursday, Aug. 31 at Minnesota, followed by a road contest at Colorado on Sept. 9.
CARMELO ANTHONY RETIRES FROM NBA:
Carmelo Anthony, the star forward who led Syracuse to an NCAA championship in his lone college season and went on to spend 19 years in the NBA, announced his retirement on Monday.
Anthony, who was not in the NBA this season, retires as the No. 9 scorer in league history. Only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal scored more than Anthony, who finishes his career with 28,289 points.
Anthony’s legacy has long been secure: He ends his playing days after being selected as one of the 75 greatest players in NBA history, a 10-time All-Star, a past scoring champion and a six-time All-NBA selection.
He was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 Final Four when he led Syracuse to the national championship, and he helped the U.S. win Olympic gold three times — at Beijing in 2008, at London in 2012 and at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
NFL APPROVES LIMITED FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING FOR THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL:
NFL owners approved Monday a flexible scheduling policy for Thursday night games on Amazon Prime Video, for Weeks 13-17 only and with at least 28 days’ notice given to the affected teams.
The league could push a Thursday night matchup in that range to Sunday afternoon if there’s a more desirable game, a mechanism currently in place for Sunday night and Monday night games.
No team would be required to play more than twice on Thursday night in a season. The rule is just for 2023, for now. Any game during Weeks 13-17 could be selected for the move to Thursday night, but the league said the bar for such a shuffle would be high.
