ALBERTS – RHULE BELIEVES GRASS IS BETTER FOR ATHLETES:
Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts spoke on Sports Nightly Monday night after being asked about a return to natural grass for Husker Football. Alberts added that he and Head Coach Matt Rhule are in the same mindset…
Alberts added that a change to grass in Memorial Stadium would prevent Nebraska from hosting graduations, concerts, and other events.
ALBERTS – HUSKER VOLLEYBALL IN MEMORIAL COULD BREAK RECORD:
Trev Alberts, Nebraska Athletic Director, said that some more changes are coming to the Volleyball Day in Nebraska event to attempt to break the national record for attendance for a women’s sporting event…
The largest crowd ever to see a women’s sporting event in the world is 90,185 in the 1999 World Cup Finals played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

BIG RED BASEBALL’S ANDERSON NAMED GOLDEN SPIKE FINALIST:
Junior Max Anderson was named a semifinalist for USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, the organization announced Monday. Anderson is one of 25 student-athletes named to the list, which names the top amateur baseball players in the nation.
Anderson is having a breakout 2023 junior campaign, batting .412 with 19 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 69 RBI and 49 runs. Anderson is one of two players nationally hitting at least .400 at the plate with 21-plus home runs and 65 or more RBI this season.
The Omaha native is third nationally with 93 hits on the season while tied for fifth on the single-season charts in program history with 21 home runs and sixth with 42 extra-base hits.
The junior set a Big Ten record in the series finale at Purdue last weekend, becoming the first Big Ten player with 15 home runs in a conference season with a traditional conference schedule.
Fan voting will be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2023. Beginning with the semifinalist announcement on May 22 and continuing through the finalist round on June 7, fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player on GoldenSpikesAward.com.
CARMELO ANTHONY RETIRES FROM NBA:
Carmelo Anthony, the star forward who led Syracuse to an NCAA championship in his lone college season and went on to spend 19 years in the NBA, announced his retirement on Monday.
Anthony, who was not in the NBA this season, retires as the No. 9 scorer in league history. Only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal scored more than Anthony, who finishes his career with 28,289 points.
Anthony’s legacy has long been secure: He ends his playing days after being selected as one of the 75 greatest players in NBA history, a 10-time All-Star, a past scoring champion and a six-time All-NBA selection.
He was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 Final Four when he led Syracuse to the national championship, and he helped the U.S. win Olympic gold three times — at Beijing in 2008, at London in 2012 and at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
2026 SUPER BOWL TO BE HOSTED AT LEVI’S STADIUM:
The Super Bowl will return to the Bay Area in 2026 at the home of the San Francisco 49ers, following a vote of approval by NFL owners on Monday at their spring meetings.
This will be the third time for the big game in the Bay Area. Levi’s Stadium, which opened in Santa Clara in 2014, also hosted Super Bowl 50 when Denver beat Carolina. The 49ers won Super Bowl 19 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto when they beat Miami after the 1984 season. The 2026 game will be Super Bowl 60.
NFL APPROVES LIMITED FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING FOR THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL:
NFL owners approved Monday a flexible scheduling policy for Thursday night games on Amazon Prime Video, for Weeks 13-17 only and with at least 28 days’ notice given to the affected teams.
The league could push a Thursday night matchup in that range to Sunday afternoon if there’s a more desirable game, a mechanism currently in place for Sunday night and Monday night games.
No team would be required to play more than twice on Thursday night in a season. The rule is just for 2023, for now. Any game during Weeks 13-17 could be selected for the move to Thursday night, but the league said the bar for such a shuffle would be high.
