BIG RED BASEBALL TAKES DOWN RUTGERS; FACES TERPS TONIGHT:
Nebraska rallied with six runs in the bottom of the seventh to open play at the Big Ten Baseball Tournament with a 9-7 win against fifth-seeded Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon in Omaha.
Nebraska (32-21-1) had nine runs on seven hits and an error, while Rutgers (33-22) posted seven runs on nine hits.
Nebraska advances to face top-seeded Maryland tonight at 6 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. KGFW’s pregame coverage is set for 5:30 PM.
STARS EARN BOYS GOLF STATE CHAMPIONSHIP:
The Kearney Catholic Stars Boys Golf team wrapped up their final day of the Class C State Golf meet at the Columbus Elks Golf Course, finishing atop the field winning the team title by three strokes over GICC.
Sophomore Jackson Dunham ended with a two day total of 149 as he claimed the individual state title. The championship is the first ever state boys golf title for Kearney Catholic.
Freshman Nash Malone finished his two day total at 160 and tied for 8th. Landon Edeal (161) was tied for 11th, Tate Redinger (164) ended tied for 18th, and Q uinten Hogeland was tied for 22nd (166).
Amherst ended fourth at 344.
BEARCAT BOYS GOLF ENDS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SIXTH:
Perry Swarm ended his Kearney High Boys Golf career in the Top Ten at the Class A State Meet at the Norfolk Country Club, as the Bearcats wrapped the season finishing 6th with a team total of 630.
After shooting 310 on day one, Kearney added ten strokes in day two shooting 320. Swarm (147) led the charge for Kearney followed by Dylan Dahlstedt (158) tied for 34th and Owen Bartee (159) tied for 36th.
Koji Kitabatake (166) ended tied for 55th and Cooper Feddersen (181) was 74th.
Omaha Westside claimed the top spot shooting 572.
RUNZA SENIORS TAKE DOWN GI HOME FEDERAL IN HOME OPENER:
The Runza Seniors of Kearney evened up their record on the season with a key sixth inning, extending their lead by adding in four runs before closing out Grand Island Home Federal in the final frame 9-3 as Kearney opened Memorial Field for the summer with a win.
Kearney (1-1) earned the win with nine runs off of ten hits and one error while Grand Island Home Federal (1-1) dropped their first game of the season with three runs on five hits and one error.
Both teams return to action at the Grand Island triangular at Ryder Park on Saturday.
65th ANNUAL NEBRASKA SHRINE BOWL GAME TICKETS AVAILABLE:
Tickets for the 65th Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game are now on sale online at the Nebraska Shrine Bowl’s official website.
General admission game tickets are $15 and first come first served seating. Club-level tickets in the mezzanine area are available for $35. Tickets are not required for children under the age of 2.
Tickets can also be purchased on game day at Foster Field Box Office. Military and first responders can contact the Shrine Bowl office directly for a special discount ticket offer of $10 each, advance sale. Students are also eligible for the special discount ticket offer with proof of a valid school ID.
The Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game is an all-star football game showcasing the talents of Nebraska high-school seniors on the gridiron before launching their collegiate careers.
LOPER WOMEN’S SOCCER ADDS EIGHT NEWCOMERS:
Nebraska Kearney head women’s soccer coach Rob Breton announced Wednesday the names of seven high school seniors and one transfer who’ll suit up for the Lopers this fall.
This is the first batch of newcomers for UNK who had a large senior class in 2022. Additional signees will be announced later this spring and summer.
A full list of newcomers can be found at KGFW.com. UNK begins fall workouts in August, then has three home exhibition games before the regular season kicks off Sept. 2-4 in Oklahoma with games against Southern Nazarene and Northwestern Oklahoma State.
