KEARNEY – The 65th annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl was in doubt. Rain and lightning continued to pour onto Ron and Carol Cope Stadium shortly after kickoff.
But after two hours of waiting, the South team took control to pick up a 17-7 victory over the north team.
After having the opening kickoff pushed back thirty minutes due to lightning in the area, the North team would strike first. North Platte’s Kolton Tilford would take the opening kickoff 68 yards, while future Loper quarterback Abram Scholting completing a 20 yard strike to Alex Phelps on the next play.
Kearney’s Treyven Beckman started the contest for the South team as a quarterback and was able to propel the South team just inside enemy territory, but the North defense held firm.
Scholting and the North offense were primed to extend their lead, when the game was again delayed, and would lead to two hours of waiting and watching the skies.

When play resumed, the North team was astray, with three false start penalties and a quick turnover on downs.
The South team would quickly take advantage in the second quarter. Former Bearcat Jack Dahlgren would provide a touchdown saving tackle early in the second quarter on a Karter Kerman 53 yard rush. When the North offensive drive failed, Beckman would complete a 48yd pass to Adonis Hutchinson on the next South drive, followed by a Caleb Newell touchdown to even the score.
The South offense took the lead late in the third quarter with a punch in from Carlos Collazo, and would sweeten the deal with a 33yd field goal from Nate McCashland in the fourth quarter.
Kearney High’s Beckman ended 6-16 for 104 yards and an interception.
The 66th annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2024.
