2024 BIG TEN CONFERENCE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED:
The Big Ten announced conference opponents for the 2024 and 2025 football seasons on Thursday, the first two seasons which include new conference members UCLA and USC. The 2024 season will be the first season with 16 teams and no divisional format.
Nebraska will play four Big Ten home games and five road contests during the 2024 season. Big Ten opponents visiting Memorial Stadium in 2024 will include Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Nebraska will travel to Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue and Big Ten newcomer UCLA.
The 2025 conference schedule will feature five home games for Nebraska, with Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Rutgers, and UCLA coming to Lincoln. Nebraska will travel to Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio State and USC during the 2025 Big Ten schedule.
Game dates for the 2024 football schedule will be announced later this year.
The Big Ten Conference schedules were developed based on a Flex Protect Plus model, which features a combination of protected opponents and rotating opponents for universities. Each school will continue to play nine conference games per season.
Nebraska’s one guaranteed annual protected matchup will be against Iowa. The Huskers and Hawkeyes have concluded the regular season against each other on Black Friday since Nebraska joined the conference in 2011.
LOPER TENNIS ADDS NEW ASSISTANT COACH:
Nebraska Kearney head tennis coach Scott Shafer announced today that Caleb Diller is the Lopers new assistant coach.
The native of Waco, Texas, will start his duties on July 1 and assist Shafer in all aspects of the men’s and women’s programs.
Diller comes to UNK after serving as a volunteer coach at Division II Lubbock (Texas) Christian for almost two years.
UNK WRESTLING OFFICIALLY UNVEILED RON & PAM BLESSING WRESTLING FACILITY:
The University of Nebraska-Kearney held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new wrestling room Thursday at the Health and Sports Center. The Ron & Pam Blessing Wrestling Facility was unveiled to the public for the first time.
The program moved into, and used, the space during the winter season. Head coach Dalton Jensen said they wanted to get it finished with graphics and special finishing touches before welcoming in the public.
Ron and Pam Blessing were the top donors to make this project happen. Pam got to cut the ribbon herself, while representing her husband who has since passed away.
NEBRASKA FOOTBALL LANDS FOUR STAR CORNERBACK COMMIT:
Nebraska and Matt Rhule have landed their top secondary target, Mario Buford, in the 2024 class. Buford is rated as a four-star by On3 and is ranked as the No. 20 cornerback in the country, the No. 144 player overall, and the No. 29 player in Texas.
Mario Buford was one of nine official visitors for the first weekend in June for Nebraska and is committing ahead of two scheduled official visits to Big Ten schools.
The four-star cornerback from DeSoto (Texas) will join his brother on the team, Marques Buford, and in the defensive secondary at Nebraska in January after he graduates high school at mid-term.
HUSKER T&F CLAIMS TWO CHAMPIONS IN DAY TWO OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Nebraska women’s track and field throwers Rhema Otabor and Axelina Johansson were crowned national champions on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Otabor, a junior from Nassau, Bahamas, earned the NCAA javelin gold medal in her first year as a Husker, breaking her own school record. Johansson, a sophomore from Hok, Sweden, won the NCAA shot put gold medal after finishing second at the NCAA Indoor Championships this year and third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last year.
They are the first Husker women to win NCAA titles since Dace Ruskule (discus) in 2006.
Today, Tyus Wilson and Michael Hoffer will compete in the high jump at 7:30 p.m. Maxwell Otterdahl and Jonah Wilson will throw the discus at 7:35 p.m, and Darius Luff will race in the 110m hurdles final at 8:42 p.m.
OKLAHOMA CLAIMS THIRD STRAIGHT SOFTBALL NATIONAL TITLE:
Jordy Bahl threw three innings of perfect relief and the Sooners won their third straight Women’s College World Series title and seventh overall, beating Florida State 3-1 on Thursday night for a two-game sweep.
The Sooners finished 61-1 and extended their Division I-record win streak to 53 games. They have won six titles since 2013 after getting their first in 2000, all under coach Patty Gasso.
Oklahoma’s only defeat was a 4-3 loss at Baylor on Feb. 19. The Sooners set a record for win percentage and had the fewest losses of any champion.
