KEARNEY SENIOR LEGION BASEBALL FALLS TO HASTINGS AT HOME:

The Kearney Runza Senior Baseball team worked themselves back from a three run hole by tying the game in the fifth inning, but gave up the winning run in the top of the sixth to drop the 4-3 contest at Memorial Field on Tuesday night.

Kearney (8-9) fell with three runs scored on six hits and three errors while Hastings won on four runs with six hits and no errors.

The Runza Seniors head out to Norfolk for an early afternoon doubleheader today, with first pitch scheduled at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL BRINGS LARSON BACK AS ASSISTANT COACH:

Nebraska volleyball and U.S. Women’s National Team legend Jordan Larson has been named a full-time assistant coach for the Nebraska volleyball program.

Larson will join Cook and assistant coaches Jaylen Reyes and Kelly Hunter on the Husker staff once her summer playing schedule wraps up in September. The NCAA Division I Council adopted a proposal in January that, among other changes, allows teams that utilize a volunteer coach to add a full-time coach position beginning this season.

One of the greatest American volleyball players in history, Larson was the team captain, Best Outside Hitter and Most Valuable Player when the U.S. won its first Olympic women’s volleyball gold medal in Tokyo in 2021.

A native of Hooper, Neb., Larson was a standout on some of the greatest teams in program history from 2005 to 2008 and was inducted into the Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020. She helped Nebraska to a top-five NCAA Tournament finish in each of her four seasons. Her teams also claimed the 2006 National Championship and the runner-up finish in 2005.

HUSKER BASEBALL’S ANDERSON, MATTHEWS EARN ALL-REGION HONORS:

Nebraska’s Max Anderson and Brice Matthews earned First-Team All-Central Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings.

The duo earned All-American recognition by Collegiate Baseball earlier this month after Anderson was a second-team selection and Matthews was a third-team honoree.

A semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and NCBWA District 6 Player of the Year, Anderson was a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten honoree while hitting .414 with 20 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 70 RBI and 51 runs scored.

Matthews concluded his junior season batting .359 at the plate with 11 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 67 RBI and 61 runs scored as a First-Team All-Big Ten selection.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL ADDS CHILDRESS, SIRIANNI TO COACHING STAFF:

Nebraska Baseball Head Coach Will Bolt announced the hiring of assistant coaches Rob Childress and Mike Sirianni to his coaching staff on Tuesday. Childress will serve as the pitching coach for the Huskers, and Sirianni will work with hitters and infielders. Both hires are pending the completion of the University of Nebraska hiring process.

Sirianni will join the Huskers as an assistant coach immediately. Childress, who has served as Nebraska’s director of player development since summer of 2021, will remain in his current role until July 1, when the NCAA permits schools to add a third full-time assistant coach.

VEGAS BLASTS PANTHERS, CLAIM FIRST STANLEY CUP:

The Vegas Golden Knights delivered from dazzling passes to Mark Stone’s hat trick to all-out goal celebrations, capturing the young organization’s first title with a 9-3 romp over the beaten up and exhausted Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Coach Bruce Cassidy, in a nod to the Knights’ brief history, started five of the original Vegas players known as the Misfits and put the sixth on the second shift. Cassidy sounded confident the day before the game that his team would play well, and it certainly did, blowing open a one-goal game in the second period to lead 6-1. The nine goals tied the record for the most in a Cup Final.

Vegas closed out the series in five games to win the cup before a delirious franchise-record crowd of 19,058 at T-Mobile Arena.
