The University of Nebraska system could see a 3.5% tuition increase in the proposed budget for the upcoming academic year.
The increase would increase tuition for UNK students by roughly $210 for the upcoming academic year. UNL students would pay $270 more in tuition and UNO students would pay $240 more.
The increases would not effect those who are covered by the Nebraska Promise scholarship program, which provides free tuition for students who qualify.
Board of Regents Chairman Tim Clare called a special board meeting last month to discuss the university’s fiscal planning, where regents rejected the idea of “peanut butter” cuts, where the university system would made cuts across the board. Instead, the board and President Ted Carter built a budget to set priorities and invest in them accordingly.
The budget will go in front of the Board of Regents at their June 22 meeting.
The Board may also consider the appointment of former University of Southern Mississippi President to be the next chancellor at UNL. Currently, Bennett is going through the state required 30-day vetting period that would end on June 21. Bennett’s appointment would be a late addition if President Carter chooses to move forward on the appointment
