SPORTS GAMBLING TO OPEN IN NEBRASKA THIS WEEK:

For the first time in the state’s history, Nebraskans will be able to legally bet on sports this week.

Starting Thursday, customers at WarHorse Casino in Lincoln can place a wager at one of 10 kiosks or the sports book window at the facility.

Under state regulations, betting is only allowed on site, but bettors can build their wagers on the WarHorse app and place them at a kiosk or sports book window.

Bets also won’t be allowed on any home game for Nebraska’s in-state teams — only if it’s an away game.

BEARCAT HOOPS CONCLUDES SHOWCASE WEEKEND IN KC:

The Kearney Girls and Boys basketball teams wrapped their D1 Midwest Showcase weekends at Kansas City’s Hy-Vee Arena over the weekend.

The games were a showcase for coaches to scout future players for collegiate programs, as well as to provide team and individual development.

The Bearcat girls finished 1-3 on Thursday and Friday while the boys went 4-0. Full recaps for each team can be found at KGFW.com.

HUSKER FOOTBALL EARNS THREE COMMITS ON FATHERS DAY:

It was a big day for Husker Football commitments on Father’s Day, as Matt Rhule and the Big Red Football team received three verbal commits.

The day started with the commitment of Texas athlete Braylen Prude. Prude, an intriguing prospect at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, is coming off an official visit to Nebraska this weekend. Prior to the Huskers getting involved, Prude’s only other offers were FCS Eastern Illinois and Division II Lane College

The second verbal commitment came from Iowa offensive lineman Jake Peters. Peters is rated as an interior three-star out of Cedar Falls. Nebraska was the first, and so far only, Power Five offer for the 6-foot-3, 260-pound offensive guard. Iowa and Iowa State showed interest, and the Hawkeyes hosted him for a camp in early June but did not extend an offer.

The final announcement came from Kansas defensive back Callen Barta out of Topeka. The commit came after his official visit with the Huskers over the weekend. Barta will bring length and speed to the Huskers’ defensive backfield. At 6-2, Barta was officially clocked at 4.43 seconds at the Iowa State camp he attended earlier this month.

Nebraska has twelve commitments currently for their 2024 class.

LEGENDARY HUSKER, NFL LINEMAN BOB BROWN PASSES AT 81:

Pro Football Hall of Famer Bob Brown died Friday in Oakland, California, the Hall of Fame announced Saturday. He was 81.

The Washington, D.C., Touchdown Club voted Brown college football’s lineman of the year in 1963. He was an All-American guard at Nebraska and was drafted in the first round (second overall) by the Eagles in 1964.

Brown is a member of the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brown is one of only three Huskers enshrined in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. He is also one of only three Huskers to have his number (No. 64) permanently retired at Nebraska.

RUNZA SENIORS TAKE DOWN SCOTTSBLUFF:

The Runza Seniors earned a big win on Sunday with a 10-2 victory over the visiting Scottsbluff WESTCO Zephyr’s at Memorial Field.

Kearney (11-9) earned the win with ten runs scored on seventeen hits with two errors, while Scottsbluff fell on two runs off of three hits and four errors.

A full recap of the contest can be found at KGFW.com. Kearney will head to Omaha on Wednesday beginning the vast Prep Tournament with matchups running until the weekend.

CLARK CLAIMS US OPEN TITLE:

Wyndham Clark has won the U.S. Open for his first major championship, beating Rory McIlroy by one shot at Los Angeles Country Club.

The 29-year-old from Denver was playing in just his seventh major and had never finished better than 75th. His even-par 70 was good enough to outlast four-time major champion McIlroy, who also shot 70.

Clark finished at 10-under 270. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also shot 70 and finished third, three shots back.
