OMAHA – Kearney held a lead throughout much of the opening contest of the Creighton Prep CWS Tournament at Millard South, but a gruesome bottom of the sixth doomed the Runza Seniors in 12-5 loss on Wednesday afternoon.
Kearney (11-10) fell by scoring five runs on six hits with one error while Millard South won with twelve runs on fourteen hits and one error.
The Runza Seniors went up early with a Jacob Hansen single in the top of the first. Nolan Smith then extended the lead for Kearney in the top of the sixth off of a home run to left field, adding three runs.
However, the game completely flipped in the bottom of the sixth scoring eleven runs off of eight hits taking their 12-5 lead.
Brayden Hodges earned the win for Millard South, allowing no hits and no runs in one and two thirds innings. Derrick Nonhof had the start for Kearney, giving up six hits and one run over four and two third innings.
Nolan Smith went 1-for-3 on the day and lead the team with three runs batted in. Garrison Burns, Kole Throckmorton, Bryce Andersen, Jase Blattner, Smith, and Hansen all recorded hits.
Kearney is currently in action with Rapid City, SD.
