RUNZA SENIORS RETURN TO MEMORIAL FIELD, BEGIN HOMESTAND:

The Kearney Runza Seniors return to Memorial Field to begin a week-long home stretch tonight facing Lincoln Southeast.

Tonight’s matchup begins a three-day stretch at home for Kearney, as the Runza Seniors host North Platte on Wednesday and Lexington on Thursday.

Tonight’s first pitch is set for 6 with KGFW’s pregame coverage at 5:45 PM. Alex Hammeke will have the action on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

FORMER HUSKER SCHWELLENBACH SELECTED FOR ALL-STAR FUTURES GAME:

Former Nebraska All-American Spencer Schwellenbach was selected by Major League Baseball for the 2023 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.

Schwellenbach, a first-team All-American and John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year at Nebraska, will join a group of 25 prospects on the National League roster that will go against 25 prospects on the American League roster on July 8 at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park. The game will be televised nationally on the MLB Network at 6 p.m. CT.

A second-round draft pick in 2021, Schwellenbach has opened his professional career with a 3-2 record and 2.76 ERA in 12 starts at Single-A Augusta in the Atlanta Braves organization.

Schwellenbach is the fourth former Husker to play in the Futures game, joining Jamal Strong (2001), Alex Gordon (2006) and Joba Chamberlain (2007). All three Huskers eventually reached the Major Leagues after playing in the Futures game.

HUSKER RECRUITMENT STAYS HOT WITH MONDAY COMMITMENTS:

Nebraska’s recruiting surge continued with a pair of 3-star prospects committing to the Huskers on Monday.

Max Guthrie, a defensive back from Colorado, pledged to the Big Red as well as Texas running back Kewan Lacy. The duo pushes Nebraska’s 2024 recruiting class to 19 players, which is ranked among the Top 20 nationally according to multiple services.

Guthrie is a 6-foot-1 safety, who attended Nebraska’s camp earlier this summer.

Lacy is a physical running back, who blends speed and power. The Lancaster, Texas native has rushed for more than 2,000 yards in high school entering his senior season.

MIAA ADDS ARKANSAS-FORT SMITH IN 2024:

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced on Monday that the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith will join the Association with full-time membership in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The MIAA CEO Council approved the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith’s (UAFS) application to join the Association with full membership in the fall of 2024.

The university becomes the MIAA’s first full-time member in the state of Arkansas. Harding University, Ouachita Baptist University and Southern Arkansas University – all in Arkansas and all members of the Great American Conference (GAC) – are current associate members of the MIAA for the sport of men’s tennis. Ouachita will also become an associate member of the MIAA for the sport of wrestling beginning with the 2023-24 season.

The university currently sponsors ten sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.

LSU WINS CWS; DOWNS FLORIDA IN GAME THREE:

LSU went from its low point of the season to the ultimate high in a span of 24 hours.

A day after it gave up the most runs ever in a College World Series game, LSU cranked up its offense and won its first national title since 2009 with an 18-4 victory over Florida on Monday night in the third and deciding game of the finals.

LSU (54-17) staved off elimination three times in bracket play and bounced back from the humiliating 24-4 loss in Game 2 to claim its seventh championship, second to Southern California’s 12.
