RUNZA SENIORS FALL TO LINCOLN SOUTHEAST; CONTINUE HOMESTAND AGAINST NORTH PLATTE:

Despite taking the lead twice in the fourth and fifth innings, the Runza Seniors could not keep pace with Lincoln Southeast as Kearney fell 7-6 at Memorial Field.

Kearney (14-13) dropped by scoring six runs on thirteen hits with two errors. Lincoln Southeast won, scoring seven runs on seven hits with error-free baseball.

The Runza Seniors continue their homestand, facing a rematch with the North Platte FNBO Nationals tonight after the Juniors contest. Pregame is set for 7:15 PM after a shortened Sports Nightly with a scheduled first pitch at 7:30.

HUSKER FOOTBALL LANDS TOP RECRUIT IN STATE:

Nebraska football is keeping the biggest recruit in the state home: Four-star tight end Carter Nelson announced his commitment to the Huskers, joining the 2024 class and giving the program another jolt during an already hot streak on the recruiting trail.

Nelson made his pledge public on Wednesday from Ainsworth High School to become the team’s 12th commitment in the last 11 days and the fourth Husker commit this week.

The Huskers won the pledge of the 6-foot-5, 215-pound hybrid tight end over Georgia, Notre Dame, Penn State and many others. Those three, plus Nebraska, are the programs he took his official visits to check out.

There are now six Nebraskans in the class.

ANDERSEN NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN:

Nebraska junior Max Anderson received his fifth second-team All-American honor this month, as Baseball America released its All-America teams on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s accolade comes after Anderson was recognized by ABCA/Rawlings, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and NCBWA as a second-team All-American earlier this month. The Omaha native was also named the NCBWA’s District 6 Player of the Year, becoming the first Husker to earn the recognition since Luke Gorsett in 2006.

A Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, Anderson was a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten honoree while hitting .414 with 20 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 70 RBI and 51 runs scored.

HUSKER FOOTBALL RECRUITMENT CONTINUES STRONG SUMMER WITH LEGACY RECRUIT:

The son of Nebraska I-Back Ken Clark, Quinn Clark, will follow in his dad’s footsteps to Lincoln to become a Husker. The 6-foot-5 and 195-pound Clark is the No. 1 player in Montana in 2024.

Clark, from Bozeman (Mont.) Gallatin picked up an offer from Nebraska following his summer camp performance on June 12th.

Clark caught the eye of the Nebraska staff during summer camp. Matt Rhule and his staff only made a couple of on-the-field offers during summer camp, and one of those offers was to Clark.

Clark had 58 receptions in his junior year for 918 yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged 15.8 yards per catch and had a 77-yard reception last season.

FORMER ARKANSAS, NFL QUARTERBACK RYAN MALLET DIES IN DROWNING ACCIDENT:

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett died Tuesday from drowning at a beach in Destin, Florida. He was 35.

Mallett began his college football career at Michigan in 2007 as a backup to Chad Henne before transferring to Arkansas and starting 26 games between the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Mallett threw for more than 3,600 yards and at least 30 touchdowns in each of his seasons with the Razorbacks. He went on to be selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft.

HAWKS CLEAR CAP ROOM; TRADE COLLINS TO JAZZ FOR RUDY GAY:

The Atlanta Hawks cleared significant salary cap space on Monday by agreeing to trade forward John Collins to the Utah Jazz for veteran forward Rudy Gay and a future second-round draft pick.

Collins, who was the subject of trade speculation during the offseason and again leading up to last week’s NBA draft, finally was dealt to Utah.

Collins, 25, was a first-round pick in 2017 and scored in double figures in each of his six seasons with Atlanta.
