RUNZA SENIORS ERRORS DROP KEARNEY TO NORTH PLATTE:

Despite a 10-3 hitting advantage, Kearney’s Runza Seniors fell to 14-14 on the year with a 5-3 loss at home to North Platte on Wednesday night.

Kearney (14-14) fell by scoring three runs on ten hits with seven errors while North Platte won with five runs scored on three hits and one error.

The Runza Seniors return to Memorial Field to wrap up their home stretch by facing Lexington Pinnacle Bank for an afternoon matchup on Thursday. First pitch is set for 5 PM.

Hear Kearney Legion Baseball on Thursday on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com. Pregame is set for 4:45 PM with Austin Jacobsen on the call.

HUSKER FOOTBALL LANDS TOP RECRUIT IN STATE:

Nebraska football is keeping the biggest recruit in the state home: Four-star tight end Carter Nelson announced his commitment to the Huskers, joining the 2024 class and giving the program another jolt during an already hot streak on the recruiting trail.

Nelson made his pledge public on Wednesday from Ainsworth High School to become the team’s 12th commitment in the last 11 days and the fourth Husker commit this week.

The Huskers won the pledge of the 6-foot-5, 215-pound hybrid tight end over Georgia, Notre Dame, Penn State and many others. Those three, plus Nebraska, are the programs he took his official visits to check out.

There are now six Nebraskans in the class.

ANDERSEN NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN:

Nebraska junior Max Anderson received his fifth second-team All-American honor this month, as Baseball America released its All-America teams on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s accolade comes after Anderson was recognized by ABCA/Rawlings, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and NCBWA as a second-team All-American earlier this month. The Omaha native was also named the NCBWA’s District 6 Player of the Year, becoming the first Husker to earn the recognition since Luke Gorsett in 2006.

A Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, Anderson was a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten honoree while hitting .414 with 20 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 70 RBI and 51 runs scored.

YANKEES’ GERMAN THROWS FIRST PERFECT GAME SINCE 2012:

Domingo German, the New York Yankees right-hander, pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history Wednesday night, retiring every Oakland batter in an 11-0 victory over the Athletics.

It was the first perfect game since Seattle Mariners ace Félix Hernández threw one against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012. There were three that season — but none since until Germán finished off the first no-hitter in the majors this year.

He joined Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998) and David Cone (1999) as Yankees to pitch perfect games.

Germán (5-5) struck out nine of 27 hitters against the A’s, who have the worst record in the majors at 21-61.

NFL FINALIZING GAMBLING SUSPENSIONS:

The NFL is finalizing disciplinary action against more players for gambling violations, including Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers Sr.

A year-long suspension would be consistent with other punishments handed down for similar violations.

The first indication Rodgers was involved came when a website that covers sports wagering, sportshandle.com, reported in early June that an unidentified Colts player had been involved with “pervasive” betting. The report said the player placed ”hundreds” of bets, some on the Colts.

The other players have not yet been identified. In April, the NFL suspended five players, four of them with the Detroit Lions, for gambling infractions.

BEDARD GOES TO BLACKHAWKS No. 1; NHL DRAFT RECAP:

Connor Bedard can finally appreciate looking forward to playing for the Chicago Blackhawks after spending the past few months avoiding the subject.

Bedard became the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history, joining Patrick Kane, who went first overall in 2007 and helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cups from 2010 to 2015. Kane’s tenure in Chicago ended in February when he was traded to the New York Rangers.

Sweden’s Leo Carlsson went second overall, chosen by the Anaheim Ducks over Michigan freshman Adam Fantilli.

Michigan’s Adam Fantilli, the third freshman to win college hockey’s top award, the Hobey Baker Trophy, went third to Columbus.
