FORMER STORM FORWARD SELECTED IN NHL DRAFT:

Former Tri-City Storm forward Gavin Brindley was taken 34th overall in the second round of the NHL Draft Thursday by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Brindley played two seasons for the Storm from 2020-22, helping the franchise win the Anderson Cup in his final year.

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL HIRES FORMER HUSKER AS ASSISTANT:

Former Nebraska softball pitcher Olivia Ferrell has been named a full-time assistant coach for the Husker softball team, Head Coach Rhonda Revelle announced Friday.

Ferrell will join Revelle, associate head coach Lori Sippel and assistant coach Diane Miller on the NU staff. The NCAA Division I Council adopted a proposal in January that, among other changes, allows teams that utilized a volunteer coach to add a full-time coach position beginning this season.

Ferrell was a five-year letterwinner for the Huskers, finishing her career ranked eighth in program history in strikeouts with 402. As a team captain, Ferrell earned all-conference honors her final season as well as a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament team, helping the Huskers to their first Big Ten Tournament title in 2022.

RUNZA SENIORS EARN GRITTY WIN OVER LEXINGTON:

The Runza Seniors battled back from a four run deficit to earn win No. 15 on Thursday night, claiming a 6-5 victory over Lexington at Memorial Field.

Kearney (15-14) won, scoring six runs on seven hits with two errors, while Lexington Pinnacle Bank (10-12) fell, scoring five runs on nine hits with no errors.

Kearney now resets on Friday before traveling to Papillion-LaVista South on Saturday for a doubleheader at Titan Field. A full game recap can be found at KGFW.com.

NEBRASKA LANDS TEXAS D-LINEMAN:

The Nebraska football team picked up its 22nd commitment in the class of 2024 on Thursday. Bay City (Texas) defensive lineman Carlon Jones officially announced his commitment to the Huskers on Twitter.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Jones is the 16th commitment NU has added to the class of 2024 over the last 22 days in June.

Jones is also the seventh commitment from the state of Texas in the class of 2024 for the Big Red and the 14th scholarship addition Matt Rhule has added to his roster since taking over in November.

ANDERSEN ADDS SIXTH ALL-AMERICAN HONOR:

Nebraska junior Max Anderson picked up his sixth second-team All-American honor this month, as D1Baseball released its All-America teams on Thursday.

Thursday’s recognition comes after Anderson was awarded by Baseball America, ABCA/Rawlings, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and NCBWA as a second-team All-American earlier this month. The Omaha native was also named the NCBWA’s District 6 Player of the Year, becoming the first Husker to earn the recognition since Luke Gorsett in 2006.

NFL SUSPENDS FOUR PLAYERS DUE TO GAMBLING POLICY:

The NFL suspended three players indefinitely Thursday for violating the league’s gambling policy and a fourth was sidelined for six games.

Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr., a projected starter for the Indianapolis Colts, and his new teammate Rashod Berry, a backup defensive end, both received indefinite suspensions and were subsequently waived by the team.

Rodgers, Berry and free agent Demetrius Taylor, who also received an indefinite suspension, cannot seek reinstatement until after the 2023 season. Taylor bet on NFL games in 2022 and Rodgers faced the same accusation.

Tennessee Titans right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season for betting on non-NFL sports at the team’s facility. He is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games.

The NFL’s gambling policy bars players, coaches and league and team officials from betting on NFL games, placing bets at team facilities or team hotels or having someone else place a bet for them, among other restrictions.
