KEARNEY BASEBALL CELEBRATES ARCHER’S FINAL HOME GAME HOSTING U-SAVE:
The Kearney Legion Baseball teams have been indebted to the services of Coach Brad Archer for over 40 years. Tonight, the final home game of his historic career comes against Grand Island U-Save Pharmacy.
Both the POST 52 Juniors and Runza Seniors wrap up their regular season at Memorial Field tonight, taking on Grand Island Tom Dinsdale Juniors and the U-Save Pharmacy Seniors. Between the junior and senior contests, Coach Archer will be honored in his final home game of his career.

KEARNEY LITTLE LEAGUE PLAYER TO REPRESENT NEBRASKA AT HOME RUN DERBY:
Hagan Gates, from Kearney Little League, will represent Nebraska in the 2023 T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby, which takes place this Sunday, July 16th at T-Mobile Field in Seattle, Washington.
The Kearney native finished in the Top Ten in the West Region of the Home Run Derby during the Kearney little League competition. The local derby was separated into three rounds in which Hagan hit the most in every round competing against area athletes.
This finish placed him to compete in Seattle, where the Top Four finalists will then travel to Williamsport.
This is Gates’ second performance at the event, as he traveled last year to the All-Star matchup for the Little League Home Run Derby in 2022.
KEARNEY NATIVE WEGNER SELECTED BY YANKEES IN NINTH ROUND:
The MLB Draft added a Kearney flair to its fanfare on Monday night, selecting a former Kearney High Bearcat and Creighton Bluejay in the ninth round to the New York Yankees.
The Kearney native racked up numerous accolades during his one season at Arkansas, including preseason All-America praise from the NCBWA, player of the week honors from the SEC and midseason All-America recognition from D1Baseball. He was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team at the year’s end.
A three-sport athlete for Kearney High School, Jared was the 13th ranked prospect in Nebraska, by Prep Baseball Report. Prior to high school, Wegner played in the 2012 Little League World Series with his Kearney squad.
HUSKER BASEBALL ADDS OLSON, KAMINSKA TO MLB DRAFT SELECTIONS:
Nebraska junior Emmett Olson was selected in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Miami Marlins on Monday afternoon. Olson, who became the sixth fourth-round selection in NU history, was the No. 110 pick overall in the draft.
Brice Matthews, Max Anderson and Olson are the first Husker trio to be taken in the first four rounds of the MLB Draft in program history after Matthews (No. 28, Astros) and Anderson (No. 45, Tigers) were taken in the first and second rounds last night, respectively.
Nebraska junior Jace Kaminska was selected in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Colorado Rockies on Monday afternoon. Kaminska, who became the seventh 10th-round selection in NU history, was the No. 292 pick overall in the draft.
This year’s draft is the fourth time in program history that the Huskers have had at least four players picked in the top 10 rounds.
HUSKER WRESTLING ANNOUNCES 2023-24 CONFERENCE OPPONENTS:
The Big Ten conference announced the opponent rotation for the 2023-24 wrestling season on Tuesday.
The Huskers will host Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Purdue, and travel to Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State and Wisconsin.
The complete schedule will be released with dates and times when it is finalized.
NORTHWESTERN FIRES HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AND ESTABLISHED ALUM PAT FITZGERALD:
Northwestern fired coach Pat Fitzgerald on Monday amid a hazing scandal that called into question his leadership of the program and damaged the university’s reputation after it mishandled its response to the allegations.
Fitzgerald’s dismissal completed a rapid fall from grace for the former All-American linebacker, the star of the 1995 Northwestern team that won the Big Ten and played in the Rose Bowl after years of losing.
Fitzgerald went 110-101 in 17 seasons as Northwestern’s head coach. He led the Wildcats to Big Ten West championships in 2018 and 2020, plus five bowl victories. But they went 4-20 over his last two seasons.
