RUNZA SENIORS UPSET TOP SEED HASTINGS; FACE NORTH PLATTE IN WINNERS SEMIFINALS:

A lethargic start for Kearney led to an all-time moment for Kearney at Ryder Park on Sunday afternoon, as the Runza Seniors blasted in four runs in the bottom of the sixth to upset the top seed in the A7 District Tournament with a 4-2 win over Hastings.

Kearney (19-17) earned the win scoring four runs on seven hits with two errors while Hastings Five Points Bank fell, scoring two runs on seven hits with no errors.

Kearney – originally the fourth seed – is now set up in the winner’s bracket to face the North Platte FNBO Nationals. North Platte won a barn-burner thirteen inning 1-0 victory over Grand Island Home Federal late Sunday night.

POST 52 CONTINUES SEASON WITH WIN IN NORTH PLATTE:

The POST 52 Kearney Juniors continued on their season with a win over the North Platte Juniors, taking the victory 9-1 at Bill Wood Field Sunday evening.

Kearney (25-16) won, scoring nine runs with five hits and one error, while North Platte fell, scoring one run on two hits with four errors.

The POST 52 Juniors now face the Hastings Juniors at Bill Wood Field at 4 PM this afternoon.

 

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL RED-WHITE GAME TICKETS ON SALE WEDNESDAY:

Tickets to Nebraska volleyball’s annual Red-White Scrimmage will go on sale Wednesday, July 19 at 10 a.m. (CT). The Huskers will host their annual scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Tickets can be purchased for $10 online at Huskers.com/tickets.

The Huskers will also have their second annual Fan Day on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. until Noon. Autograph tables will be set up on the concourse of the Devaney Center, and a single autograph line will extend around the concourse of the building.

 

HUSKER PIPELINE EXTENDS TO HAWAII; BIG RED LAND FOUR STAR OL:

Donovan Raiola, Matt Rhule and the Nebraska football program just keep on rolling on the recruiting trail.

The Huskers landed 16 commitments from June 8-July 1, and they just grabbed themselves another big one: Four-star 2024 Hawaii offensive lineman Preston Taumua is N.

Taumua is the fifth four-star commitment in Nebraska’s 2024 class and is the team’s fourth offensive line pledge of the cycle.

Taumua, who is ranked as the country’s No. 228 overall prospect, is the Huskers’ second-highest ranked commit in the class behind tight end Carter Nelson (No. 161 overall) and joins Nelson as the Huskers’ second 2024 commit ranked in the Rivals250.

 

FORMER HUSKER MATTHEWS INKS WITH ASTROS:

Former Nebraska infielder Brice Matthews signed his major league deal with the Houston Astros Saturday.

Matthews was the 28th pick in this year’s draft by the Houston Astros. Mathews signed a deal worth over $2.4 million.

In 2022, Matthews appeared in 45 games, making 44 starts for the Huskers. He hit .261 at the plate, where he totaled 41 hits, 29 RBI and 31 runs.

 

HUSKER SOFTBALL ADDS ST. JOHN’S TRANSFER:

The Husker softball team added another talented player to its 2024 roster on Saturday in St. John’s transfer Peyton Cody. Cody joins the Huskers as a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility remaining.

Cody played five seasons at St. John’s, but is eligible for a sixth season due to a medical redshirt in 2022 and an NCAA eligibility waiver for the 2020 Covid season.

Cody played in 149 games with 139 starts at St. John’s. She posted a .316 career batting average with the Red Storm, collecting 134 hits, 29 doubles, 20 home runs and 100 RBIs.

Cody came back from the injury to post a strong final season with the Red Storm in 2023. She hit .316 over 40 starts, producing nine doubles, eight homers and 27 RBIs. 

 

HUSKERS’ PETRIE AIDS AUSTRALIA IN U19 FIBA WORLD WIN:

Jessica Petrie scored 10 points and added six rebounds to help Australia to an 85-45 win over Argentina in the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Madrid, Spain on Sunday.

Petrie, a 6-2 forward from Gold Coast, Australia, hit 4-of-10 shots from field, including a pair of three-pointers, while adding three assists, a blocked shot and a steal in nearly 17 minutes of action off the bench. Through two games in Madrid, Petrie is averaging 6.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 block and 1.0 steal.

The incoming freshman to the Nebraska women’s basketball team helped Australia improve to 1-1 in Group A play heading into Tuesday’s match-up with France. Tip-off on Tuesday is set for 1:45 p.m. (CT).

 

TITANS LAND DEANDRE HOPKINS:

The Tennessee Titans hope they’ve filled their major need at wide receiver with three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal worth $26 million with incentives that could push that to $32 million.

The Titans had the advantage of being the first NFL team Hopkins visited after being released by Arizona in May.. Hopkins also visited the New England Patriots later that week.
