RUNZA SENIORS SEASON, ARCHER’S TENURE ENDS TO PAT HAGGE:
Brad Archer’s tenure as the head of the Runza Senior legion program came to an end on Sunday afternoon at Bellevue West’s Allred Field, falling 7-4 in the American Division elimination game to the Pat Hagge Millard South seniors.
Kearney (21-21) fielded their final loss after scoring four runs on eleven hits with one error. Millard South won on seven hits with six hits and one error.
Kearney ends the season as the A7 District Runner-Up and 21-21 on the season.
Archer ends his tenure with over 1400 wins on his resume.
NCA ALL-STAR BASKETBALL GAMES SET IN LINCOLN TONIGHT:
The Nebraska All Star Coaches Association Basketball Games are set for tonight in Lincoln at Lincoln North Star High School. The Girls game starts at 6 PM, with the Boys game tip off at 8. .
Local athletes competing tonight include: Kearney High’s Maddy Province, Tatum Rusher, and Jack Dahlgren; Centrura’s Sydney Davis; Adams Central’s Rachel Goodon; Gothenburg’s Kynlee Strauser; and Shelton’s MaKenna Willis.
Area coaches representing Central Nebraska include Doniphan-Trumbull’s Kelan Buhr and Noah Maulsby from Ravenna.
NEBRASKA BASKETBALL ADDS SENEGAL NATIVE MATAR DIOP:
With two open spots still to fill for the 2023-24 season, Nebraska made a surprise addition on Sunday.
2023 Erie (Pennsylvania) Keystone Athletic Academy forward Matar Diop announced his commitment to the Huskers.
The 6-foot-9, 210-pound native of Dakar, Senegal, chose NU over Arizona State, Seton Hall, Ole Miss, and others.
Nebraska offered Diop, who boasts a 7-3 wingspan, earlier this summer.
HUSKER HOOPS HEADS TO SPAIN THIS WEEK:
The Nebraska men’s basketball team embarks on its foreign tour this week, as the Huskers will depart for Spain this Friday, July 28.
The team will visit Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona on the trip and play once in each city against local teams. NU will play in Madrid on July 30, Valencia on Aug. 2, and Barcelona on Aug. 5. A full schedule is listed at KGFW.com.
NCAA programs are allowed to take foreign trips once every four years and this will be Nebraska basketball’s first foreign trip since going to Italy in the summer of 2019. It will be the second time NU has traveled to Spain, as the Huskers also went there in 2015.
ICYMI – MAHER SIGNS WITH BRONCOS:
Former Husker and Kearney Bearcat Brett Maher will be kicking for a new team this season. Numerous sources confirm that he has signed a one year deal with the Denver Broncos.
Maher had kicked for the Saints in 2021 under current Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton.
Maher struggled with the Cowboys in the post-season last year after having a great regular season. He had a try out with Denver earlier this summer.
