NEBRASKA FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – TONY WHITE & TERRANCE KNIGHTON TUESDAY PRESSER:

WHITE – ALL ABOUT REPS:

Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Tony White addressed the media for the first time in fall camp Tuesday afternoon, and reiterated that right now it is all about reps and getting in shape for the Blackshirts…

The Huskers are employing a new 3-3-5 scheme with the addition of White this offseason.

WHITE – BLACKSHIRTS GETTING INTO GAME SHAPE:

First year Defensive Coordinator for Nebraska Tony White spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice, saying his defense has bulked up but still needs some time to get their stamina ready…

Head Coach Matt Rhule has brought in a new strength, conditioning, and recovery staff hoping to aid the team prior to the start of the season on August 31 at Minnesota.

WHITE – COACHES NEED TO HELP PLAYERS LEARN ALL MOVING PARTS:

Defensive Coordinator for the Huskers Tony White has installed his new 3-3-5 scheme throughout spring ball and into the first fall practices. White added after Tuesday’s practice that his defense is still learning – including the coaches…

The Huskers have moved several players into new positions on both sides of the ball, including former Creighton Prep tight end AJ Rollins who has now moved to defensive end.

WHITE – HUSKER SPEED HAS DEFENSE PLAYING FAST:

Tony White, first year defensive coordinator for the Huskers, has been happy with his team’s technical traits in the first few days of practice but wants to see more speed from his team…

Nebraska is hoping that White’s new 3-3-5 scheme lifts the Big Red to their first postseason berth since 2016.

KNIGHTON – DEFENSIVE LINE HAS BOUGHT INTO WEIGHT:

Defensive Line coach Terrance Knighton has been impressed by both his younger crew and older lineman so far in terms of their body frames, shapes, and sizes…

Nebraska’s defensive line has received numerous transfers and new faces since the end of 2022, and is hoping to lean on experienced veterans such as Nash Hutmacher and Ty Robinson.

KNIGHTON – LINEMEN LEARNING AT THE SAME TIME:

Defensive line coach Terrance Knighton stated after Tuesday’s practice that his entire group – coaches, lineman and even himself – continue to learn within the new defensive system…

The Huskers hope to keep learning up to the season opener at Minnesota on August 31.

LOPER MEN’S HOOPS REPORTS FRIDAY; BEGIN PREP TO COSTA RICA:

The Nebraska-Kearney men’s basketball team will report this Friday, August 4, in preparation for a trip to Costa Rica.

The Lopers will practice twice daily before leaving for Costa Rica on Wednesday, August 9. UNK will play exhibition games on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11 in San Jose with both contests tipping-off at night. The competition will be an all-star squad of college-aged players.

UNK’s 14-player roster includes six returners and eight newcomers. Two of the newcomers will not make the trip due to singing with the Lopers late this summer.

The 2023-24 regular season begins on Saturday, Nov. 18, when Chadron State comes to Buckle Court.

HUSKER WBB HITS CENTURY MARK IN ATHENS ALL-STAR WIN IN GREECE:

Annika Stewart scored 22 points to lead six Huskers in double figures as the Nebraska women’s basketball team rolled to a 101-49 victory over the Athens All Stars at the Eurohoops Dome in Greece on Tuesday.

Two-time All-Big Ten center Alexis Markowski added a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

Nebraska will be back in action on Thursday, Aug. 3 against the Patras All Stars at 11 a.m. (CT), before concluding their three-game trip on Monday, Aug. 7 against the Crete All Stars at 11 a.m. (CT).

USWNT SLIPS INTO ROUND OF SIXTEEN AFTER DRAW:

The two-time reigning champion United States came an inch short of Women’s World Cup elimination, but Portugal’s late near-miss helped the Americans avoid the biggest upset in tournament history.

The Americans slipped through to the knockout round Tuesday despite a listless, uninspiring 0-0 draw against Portugal. The U.S. won only one game in group play for the first time in tournament history, and scored just four goals over three games.

The tie was just enough to ensure the Americans advanced to the knockout round. The Americans have never been eliminated in the group stage at the World Cup.
