NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL SET TO TRAVEL FOR BIG TEN MEDIA DAYS:

Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook and junior captains Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez will participate in the second annual Big Ten Volleyball Media Days today at the Big Ten Network Headquarters in Chicago.

The Huskers will hold their official press conference from 2:40-3:00 p.m., and it will be streamed on B1G+. Cook, Beason and Rodriguez will also make stops at a variety of different stations throughout their afternoon in Chicago.

Nebraska’s first official practice for the 2023 season will be on Tuesday, Aug. 8. The Red-White Scrimmage is set for Saturday, Aug. 19.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – MATT RHULE MONDAY PRESSER:

RHULE – FARMER SUSPENDED BY TEAM:

The first day of fall practices for the Nebraska Football team came with some added drama, as a returning starter in the defensive backfield was not at practice on Monday. First year Head Coach Matt Rhule had more details…

Rhule reiterated later it is a “wait and see” approach with Farmer, who was the second leader in tackles last season for the Blackshirts.

RHULE – MARTIN A GOOD HIRE REPLACING WAGER:

Nebraska Football was off to a shaky start for preseason camp as tight ends coach Bob Wager resigned after seven months on the job Friday evening. Replacing him is Josh Martin, an analyst that received plenty of praise from Matt Rhule after Monday’s practice…

Martin has become the interim-tight end coach replacing Wager. Rhule added that a permanent hire can still be made later.

RHULE – REPS ARE MOST IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG PLAYERS:

First Year Husker Head Coach Matt Rhule addressed the media after the opening practice of preseason camp on Monday, adding he was thrilled to see his younger players receiving more practice time…

Rhule complemented the team speed as well from his incoming freshman class.

RHULE – FRESHMEN SPEED STANDS OUT:

Head Coach for Nebraska Football Matt Rhule was impressed by the overall speed of his young freshman group after his first day of practice for fall camp on Monday…

The Huskers are hoping that more team speed can bring Nebraska back to a bowl game, as the last time the Big Red went bowling was in 2016.

RHULE – TEAM LIFE ON CAMPUS IN DORMS:

Matt Rhule went old-school for his first Husker fall practices, placing the team back on campus in the dorm rooms. Rhule shared he was ecstatic to get started early…

Rhule added that all coaches – including the support staff of strength coaches, analysts, trainers, and others – are all staying in the dorms as part of a team-bonding experience to begin the preseason.

RHULE – BUILDING BROTHERHOOD ON CAMPUS:

Head Coach for Nebraska Football Matt Rhule discussed his passion for the idea to keep the entire football squad on campus during fall camp after Monday’s opening session…

The Huskers started their fall camp with players reporting on Saturday. Nebraska opens their season on August 31 at Minnesota.

FARMER SUSPENDED FROM HUSKER FOOTBALL PROGRAM:

Myles Farmer, a rangy safety who ranked second for Nebraska in tackles last season, has been suspended from the team as it ramps up preparation for the 2023 season.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed the news following NU’s first practice of preseason camp Monday. Farmer is not currently included on NU’s 120-man fall camp roster.

Rhule said Farmer’s suspension was a result of not adhering to the “little things” that were required with meeting Nebraska’s “standard” as a program. Rhule did not specify when Farmer might return to the team.

Farmer, a native of Atlanta, started 11 games in 2022 and made a career-high 73 tackles.

HUSKER MEN’S HOOPS TAKES DOWN MADRID ALL-STARS:

Brice Williams had a game-high 28 points to lead five players in double figures, as Nebraska rallied for an 89-84 overtime win over the Madrid All-Stars Monday evening.

Williams, a transfer from Charlotte, hit 10-of-14 shots from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lead a short-handed attack for the Huskers, who shot 46 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers in the win.

The Huskers forced 20 turnovers and held Madrid to 36 percent shooting. The Huskers will play their second game of the trip on Wednesday, when they travel to Valencia, Tipoff for that game is set for Noon (Central).

USWNT SLIPS INTO ROUND OF SIXTEEN AFTER DRAW:

The two-time reigning champion United States came an inch short of Women’s World Cup elimination, but Portugal’s late near-miss helped the Americans avoid the biggest upset in tournament history.

The Americans slipped through to the knockout round Tuesday despite a listless, uninspiring 0-0 draw against Portugal. The U.S. won only one game in group play for the first time in tournament history, and scored just four goals over three games.

The tie was just enough to ensure the Americans advanced to the knockout round. The Americans have never been eliminated in the group stage at the World Cup.
