SUSPENDED FARMER HEADS TO TRANSFER PORTAL FROM HUSKERS:

Nebraska defensive back Myles Farmer has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Farmer was recently suspended from the team.

A junior in 2023, Farmer started 11 games for the Cornhuskers in 2022. He finished second on the team with 73 tackles, a career high.

Head Coach Matt Rhule stated after Monday’s opening practice of fall camp that the safety had been suspended from the team due to a breaking of “ the standard” of the program.

 

HUSKERS’ PUNTER BUSCHINI ADDED TO RAY GUY AWARD WATCH LIST:

Brian Buschini was one of 50 punters nationally named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Ray Guy Award, announced on Wednesday. The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate punter in the FBS, and Buschini made the watch list for the second year in a row.

In his first season at Nebraska in 2022, Buschini averaged 44.0 yards per punt, a total that ranked eighth in Husker history and 25th nationally. He had 16 punts of 50 yards or longer, including a 74-yard punt against Wisconsin that ranked as the seventh-longest punt in school history.

Prior to Nebraska, Buschini spent three seasons at Montana from 2019 to 2021. In his final season with the Griz, Buschini was named the 2021 FCS Punter of the Year and a first-team All-American.

Hutmacher continued in saying he and fellow D-Lineman Blaise Gunnerson have been impressed by the speed of the young additions.

 

SHERMAN – DEVELOPMENT IS MOST IMPORTANT PART OF FALL CAMP:

Georgia transfer linebacker MJ Sherman addressed the Nebraska media for the first time in fall camp after Tuesday’s practice, and relayed his priority at the start of practices…

Sherman is a two-time national champion with Georgia and a former five-star recruit with two years of eligibility remaining with the Big Red. 

 

SHERMAN – MINDSET DOESN’T STOP IN DOG DAYS OF SUMMER:

Nebraska is hoping Sherman can make an immediate impact as a former five-star recruit.

 

GUNNERSON – TEAM AND DEFENSE IS LOCKED IN ON EACH REP:

Blaise Gunnerson, a returning piece of the Blackshirts defensive line, spoke after Tuesday’s practice about the team’s overall respect for each practice early in camp…

Gunnerson made a tackle in each game of the 2022 season, and is hoping to become a big contributor on the defensive line this season.

A main talking point from Tuesday’s practice was the players’ conditioning and body shape coming out of the off-season into fall camp. 

 

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL TV COVERAGE, START TIMES ANNOUNCED:

The Nebraska volleyball team will have 20 of its 29 regular-season matches set for TV broadcasts this season. 

The Huskers will play on Big Ten Network 14 times, on Nebraska Public Media five times and on ESPNU once.

Nebraska had the No. 1 recruiting class in three consecutive years. Now the Huskers aim to reclaim the Big Ten from Wisconsin who has won the conference title in three straight seasons.

John Cook, Nebraska Volleyball Head Coach was asked about his thoughts on transfers within the Big Ten switching schools to another conference team. Cook kept his thoughts short and blunt at Big Ten Media Days Tuesday…

Nebraska was the benefit of the portal last season, gaining an All-American middle blocker in Kaitlyn Hord from Penn State. 

 

LOPER MEN’S HOOPS REPORTS FRIDAY; BEGIN PREP TO COSTA RICA:

The Nebraska-Kearney men’s basketball team will report this Friday, August 4, in preparation for a trip to Costa Rica.

The Lopers will practice twice daily before leaving for Costa Rica on Wednesday, August 9. UNK will play exhibition games on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11 in San Jose with both contests tipping-off at night. The competition will be an all-star squad of college-aged players.

UNK’s 14-player roster includes six returners and eight newcomer s. Two of the newcomers will not make the trip due to singing with the Lopers late this summer.

The 2023-24 regular season begins on Saturday, Nov. 18, when Chadron State comes to Buckle Court.

Head Coach Matt Rhule has brought in a new strength, conditioning, and recovery staff hoping to aid the team prior to the start of the season on August 31 at Minnesota. 

 

WHITE – COACHES NEED TO HELP PLAYERS LEARN ALL MOVING PARTS:

The Huskers have moved several players into new positions on both sides of the ball, including former Creighton Prep tight end AJ Rollins who has now moved to defensive end. 

 

WHITE – HUSKER SPEED HAS DEFENSE PLAYING FAST:

Tony White, first year defensive coordinator for the Huskers, has been happy with his team’s technical traits in the first few days of practice but wants to see more speed from his team…

Nebraska is hoping that White’s new 3-3-5 scheme lifts the Big Red to their first postseason berth since 2016.

 

KNIGHTON – DEFENSIVE LINE HAS BOUGHT INTO WEIGHT:

Nebraska’s defensive line has received numerous transfers and new faces since the end of 2022, and is hoping to lean on experienced veterans such as Nash Hutmacher and Ty Robinson.

 

KNIGHTON – LINEMEN LEARNING AT THE SAME TIME:

Defensive line coach Terrance Knighton stated after Tuesday’s practice that his entire group – coaches, lineman and even himself – continue to learn within the new defensive system…

The Huskers hope to keep learning up to the season opener at Minnesota on August 31. 

 

IOWA STATE QUARTERBACK ACCUSED OF BETTING ON CYCLONE SPORTS:

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers has been accused of gambling on Cyclones sports events, including a football game, and was charged Tuesday with tampering with records related to an Iowa Criminal Division investigation into sports gambling.

The criminal complaint said Dekkers placed 366 online bets worth more than $2,799. According to documents, those bets included 26 Iowa State athletic events and a 2021 football game with Oklahoma State when Dekkers was a backup. He did not play in the game.

There were three other current or former Iowa State athletes facing the same charge, according to Iowa state online court records.
