KGFW Friday Afternoon Sports – 8/4/2023

By Austin Jacobsen Aug 4, 2023 | 2:42 PM

REPORT – OREGON AND WASHINGTON TO JOIN BIG TEN:

The Pac-12 appears to be nearing a full-scale collapse.

Oregon and Washington are slated to join the Big Ten in 2024, which puts the Pac-12’s future in doubt.

A Big Ten vote is expected to take place today to formalize the admissions of Oregon and Washington to the conference.

USC and UCLA were added to the Big Ten last summer, and will formally join the conference in 2024.

Likewise, Arizona has been added to the Big 12 officially as of this afternoon.

SCOTT NAMED TO RIMINGTON WATCH LIST:

Ben Scott was one of 40 centers nationally named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s top center. The award is named after former Husker Dave Rimington, a two-time unanimous All-American, two-time winner of the Outland Trophy and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Scott is in his first season at Nebraska in 2023 after transferring from Arizona State.

A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Scott is the second Husker to earn a spot on a national award watch list after punter Brian Buschini was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list earlier this week.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL THURSDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – RB COACH EJ BARTHEL & PLAYERS:

BARTHEL – RUNNING BACK DETAILS:

New running backs coach EJ Barthel spoke to the media after Thursday’s practice and addressed the details his backs are focusing on in fall camp…

Nebraska brings a strong stable of running backs in returning leading rusher Anthony Grant, former starters Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson, and talented freshmen talent.

BARTHEL – RUNNING BACKS PLAY WITH LION MINDSET:

Nebraska Football running backs coach EJ Barthel addressed the media after Thursday’s practice and spoke on the new mentality in the backfield…

The Huskers are hoping to have that mentality lead Nebraska to their first 1,000 yard rusher since Devine Ozigbo crossed the threshold in 2017.

BARTHEL – FILM ROOM AIDS IN CORRECTING MISTAKES:

Husker Football running backs coach EJ Barthel spoke to the media after Thursday’s practice and said his backs are improving each day by playing fast and learning from their mistakes…

Nebraska has had an early emphasis on the running game in fall camp, as offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield stated that he’d like to rely on a strong running game this season.

ERVIN – OFFENSIVE LINE BECOMING VETERANS:

Returning running back Gabe Ervin had high praise for his offensive line after Thursday’s practice, saying that he sees improvement through experience for the Pipeline…

Nebraska hopes Ervin can remain healthy while aiding the Big Red rushing attack, likely rotating with Anthony Grant and Rahmir Johnson.

JOHNSON – MORE TEAM ORIENTED FALL CAMP:

Rahmir Johnson had a lackluster 2022 season, receiving fewer snaps than in 2021 and less touches in Mark Whipple’s offense. Johnson spoke after Thursday’s practice that so far in fall camp, he can tell some differences with the team…

The biggest difference in comments from coaches and players so far has been the amount of repetitions each player receives during practices into the first week of camp.

SCOTT – LEANER, BIGGER, STRONGER:

The prize transfer for the offensive line this off-season came from Arizona State as the new center for the Pipeline, Ben Scott, spoke after Thursday’s practice that he’s ready to show off his new body after the off-season…

Scott was well regarded after his two seasons with the Sun Devils, and was added to the Rimington watch list early Friday.

HASTINGS COLLEGE ANNOUNCES NEXT HALL OF FAME CLASS:

Eight individuals and two teams will celebrate their induction as the 34th class to join the Hastings College Athletic Hall of Fame during a reception and banquet held in conjunction with Hastings College Homecoming on Saturday, September 30.

The 2023 Hastings College Athletic Hall of Fame class includes: Richard “Dick” Metz ‘72 of Sherman, Illinois, for football; Denis Lessor ‘79 of Kansas City, Missouri, for men’s basketball; Kathie (Daffer) Turley ‘81 of Valley Center, Kansas, for track and field/cross country and volleyball; Comron Yazdgerdi ‘05 of Lexington, Nebraska, for men’s tennis; Jordan Green ‘13 of Bennet, Nebraska, for men’s soccer; Lauren Shomaker Hewitt ‘15 of Omaha, Nebraska, for track and field/cross country; McKay Inman ‘15 of Aurora, Colorado, for men’s tennis; and Jim Boeve of Hastings, Nebraska, for meritorious service.

The teams being inducted include: the 1973 Men’s Basketball Team, completed a 25-5 record, won the District 11 Championship and played in the NAIA National Tournament; and the 1989 Men’s Basketball Team, completed a 26-9 record, qualified for the NAIA National Tournament and made it to the Elite 8 for the first time in school history.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL THURSDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – MARCUS SATTERFIELD COMMENTS:

SATTERFIELD – TEAM TRANSITIONED WELL FROM SUMMER TO FALL:

Offensive Coordinator for Nebraska Football Marcus Satterfield addressed the media after Thursday’s practice and began his comments by saying he was thrilled to see the quick transition from his team from the off-season to fall camp…

The Huskers will have a new quarterback under center in Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims leading the Big Red. Nebraska begins their season on August 31 at Minnesota.

SATTERFIELD – EACH PLAYER IS GETTING VALUABLE REPS:

Marcus Satterfield, Nebraska Football’s Offensive Coordinator, has been excited to see many of his players receiving valuable practice time early in fall camp…

Satterfield’s comments echo the similar sentiment from defensive coordinator Tony White and Head Coach Matt Rhule from earlier this week.

SATTERFIELD – YOUNG RECEIVERS BRING A LOT OF SPEED TO BIG RED:

Husker Football Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield was asked what has stood out the most about his young receivers at the beginning of fall camp…

Satterfield added he’s interested to see what young players continue their development from fall camp into September and later into the season to eventually contribute during conference play.

SATTERFIELD – TRAITS SOUGHT OUT IN A RUNNING BACK:

Marcus Satterfield, Nebraska Football Offensive Coordinator, was asked after Thursday’s practice what traits he is looking for in his running backs during fall camp…

Satterfield added later his expectation is to have a lethal ground attack that can be used when the team needs to run, especially inside of conference play in the Big Ten.

SATTERFIELD – MORE THAN ONE BACK IS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

The running back room has been an interesting conundrum for Nebraska Football for several seasons. Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield doubled down after Thursday’s practice, saying it can’t just be one back to handle the load themselves…

Nebraska’s leading rusher last season returns in Anthony Grant, along with former starters Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson as well as other young talents aiming to make a splash.

SATTERFIELD – RUNNING MUST BE AT A HIGH LEVEL WHEN NEEDED:

Nebraska Football is hoping to get back to their roots when it relates to its ground-and-pound attack. Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield reiterated that intent after Thursday’s practice…

The Huskers are aiming to return to their top rushing days – the Big Red have not had a one-thousand yard rusher since Devine Ozigbo in 2018.
