HASTINGS COLLEGE ANNOUNCES NEXT HALL OF FAME CLASS:

Eight individuals and two teams will celebrate their induction as the 34th class to join the Hastings College Athletic Hall of Fame during a reception and banquet held in conjunction with Hastings College Homecoming on Saturday, September 30.

The 2023 Hastings College Athletic Hall of Fame class includes: Richard “Dick” Metz ‘72 of Sherman, Illinois, for football; Denis Lessor ‘79 of Kansas City, Missouri, for men’s basketball; Kathie (Daffer) Turley ‘81 of Valley Center, Kansas, for track and field/cross country and volleyball; Comron Yazdgerdi ‘05 of Lexington, Nebraska, for men’s tennis; Jordan Green ‘13 of Bennet, Nebraska, for men’s soccer; Lauren Shomaker Hewitt ‘15 of Omaha, Nebraska, for track and field/cross country; McKay Inman ‘15 of Aurora, Colorado, for men’s tennis; and Jim Boeve of Hastings, Nebraska, for meritorious service.

The teams being inducted include: the 1973 Men’s Basketball Team, completed a 25-5 record, won the District 11 Championship and played in the NAIA National Tournament; and the 1989 Men’s Basketball Team, completed a 26-9 record, qualified for the NAIA National Tournament and made it to the Elite 8 for the first time in school history.

ARIZONA IN TALKS TO JOIN BIG 12; OTHER EXPANSION COMING:

Arizona is in talks to join the Big 12, and a board of regents meeting Thursday night could determine whether Arizona State is ready to leave the Pac-12, too, and join the Wildcats.

Arizona State was not as far along in the process, which could slow down Arizona’s final decision because the Tucson-based school would prefer to be in sync with its rivals from Tempe.

The boards of regents for Arizona’s two biggest universities, along with the University of Washington, scheduled special meetings for Thursday night amid speculation that more Pac-12 schools could leave the flailing conference.

The Wildcats were also approved by the Big 12 for a move should Arizona agree to the transition as of Thursday night.

The Big Ten conference also reported that league commissioner Toni Pettiti has been given the green light to pursue further expansion from the league’s presidents.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL THURSDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – MARCUS SATTERFIELD COMMENTS:

SATTERFIELD – TEAM TRANSITIONED WELL FROM SUMMER TO FALL:

Offensive Coordinator for Nebraska Football Marcus Satterfield addressed the media after Thursday’s practice and began his comments by saying he was thrilled to see the quick transition from his team from the off-season to fall camp…

The Huskers will have a new quarterback under center in Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims leading the Big Red. Nebraska begins their season on August 31 at Minnesota.

SATTERFIELD – EACH PLAYER IS GETTING VALUABLE REPS:

Marcus Satterfield, Nebraska Football’s Offensive Coordinator, has been excited to see many of his players receiving valuable practice time early in fall camp…

Satterfield’s comments echo the similar sentiment from defensive coordinator Tony White and Head Coach Matt Rhule from earlier this week.

SATTERFIELD – YOUNG RECEIVERS BRING A LOT OF SPEED TO BIG RED:

Husker Football Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield was asked what has stood out the most about his young receivers at the beginning of fall camp…

Satterfield added he’s interested to see what young players continue their development from fall camp into September and later into the season to eventually contribute during conference play.

SATTERFIELD – TRAITS SOUGHT OUT IN A RUNNING BACK:

Marcus Satterfield, Nebraska Football Offensive Coordinator, was asked after Thursday’s practice what traits he is looking for in his running backs during fall camp…

Satterfield added later his expectation is to have a lethal ground attack that can be used when the team needs to run, especially inside of conference play in the Big Ten.

SATTERFIELD – MORE THAN ONE BACK IS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

The running back room has been an interesting conundrum for Nebraska Football for several seasons. Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield doubled down after Thursday’s practice, saying it can’t just be one back to handle the load themselves…

Nebraska’s leading rusher last season returns in Anthony Grant, along with former starters Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson as well as other young talents aiming to make a splash.

SATTERFIELD – RUNNING MUST BE AT A HIGH LEVEL WHEN NEEDED:

Nebraska Football is hoping to get back to their roots when it relates to its ground-and-pound attack. Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield reiterated that intent after Thursday’s practice…

The Huskers are aiming to return to their top rushing days – the Big Red have not had a one-thousand yard rusher since Devine Ozigbo in 2018.

NEBRASKA WBB DOMINATES IN SECOND WIN IN GREECE:

Alexis Markowski produced her second consecutive double-double with game highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 111-48 win over the Patras All Stars at Promitheas Park on Thursday.

Markowski, a 6-3 junior from Lincoln, hit 6-of-14 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 three-pointers, while knocking down 4-of-6 free throws. The two-time All-Big Ten center also grabbed eight offensive rebounds and snagged four steals in less than 20 minutes of work for the Big Red.

Nebraska concludes its three-game tour of Greece on Monday, Aug. 7 against the Crete All Stars at 11 a.m. (CT).
