UNK FOOTBALL RECEIVING VOTES IN AFCA COACHES POLL

UNK Football was one of three MIAA schools receiving votes in the Preseason AFCA Coaches Poll.

Loper football recorded a singular vote in the poll. Washburn and Central Oklahoma also received votes in the poll, while three conference foes were ranked (Pitt State #4, Northwest Missouri #6, Emporia State #19)

Two-time defending champion Ferris State was picked first in the preseason poll.

UNK VOLLEYBALL AIMS TO CONTINUE NCAA TOURNAMENT STREAK; BEGINS PRACTICES TODAY:

The Nebraska Kearney volleyball team, aiming to make the NCAA Tournament for an unprecedented 24th consecutive year, reports to fall camp today.

The Lopers will have eight practices prior to the annual “Blue/White” scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 19 (3 p.m.).

This year, three additional home scrimmages are open to the public; note scores and statistics cannot be taken or reported for these matches. These workouts come against Metro State (Aug. 25; 6 pm. & Aug. 26; 12 p.m.) and South Dakota Mines (Aug. 26; 10:30 a.m.).

Head coach Rick Squiers, now 729-102 in his UNK tenure, has a 22-player roster that includes 2022 All-Americans Emersen Cyza (Alliance) and Jaden Ferguson (Lincoln SE). Ferguson is a grad transfer who previously played at MIAA rival Northwest Missouri.

UNK will face longtime rival Wayne State in an exhibition match as part of “Volleyball Day in Nebraska” on Aug. 30. The regular season begins two days later in Salt Lake City at the Westminster College Invite. The home opener comes on Wednesday, Sept. 6, vs. Peru State.

UNK FOOTBALL ASST COACH MOSES TO BE ACTING HEAD COACH WEDNESDAY

Moses Harper, UNK passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach, will be the acting head coach for Wednesday’s morning practice.

Head Coach Ryan Held said “I’m very excited for Coach Harper. We want to elevate our minority players and coaches in our program. Moses is a big-time coach who deserves to be a head coach soon,”

Harper joined the UNK program in January and previously was an assistant coach at Missouri Western, William Jewell (Mo.), Fort Scott (Kan.) C.C. and Coahoma (Miss.) C.C.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL MONDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – OFFENSIVE STAFF

OC MARCUS SATTERFIELD – GOOD DAY FOR SIMS

Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield spoke to the media Monday after practice and complimented Quarterback Jeff Sims’ work ethic throughout fall camp.

Sims was named starting quarterback after a quarterback battle with Casey Thompson in the spring.

QB JEFF SIMS – ROLE OF FIDONE IN OFFENSE

QB Jeff Sims was asked after practice by the media on Monday about the role that TE Thomas Fidone would have with the offense.

Fidone was the #1 ranked TE out of the class of 2020 when he signed with the Huskers, but has yet to catch a pass with the Huskers due to injuries during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

WR COACH GARRET MCGUIRE – MARCUS WASHINGTON GOOD ROLE MODEL

WR Coach Garret McGuire praised the leadership of Senior Marcus Washington after Monday’s practice

Washington had 31 receptions last year with the Huskers, including a touchdown against Georgia Southern. He spent three years at Texas before transferring to Nebraska ahead of the 2022 season.

RETIRED NFL OFFENSIVE TACKLE AND “THE BLIND SIDE” INSPIRATION OHER CLAIMS HE WAS NEVER ADOPTED

Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose supposed adoption out of grinding poverty by a wealthy, white family was immortalized in the 2009 movie “The Blind Side,” petitioned a Tennessee court Monday with allegations that a central element of the story was a lie concocted by the family to enrich itself at his expense.

The 14-page petition, filed in Shelby County, Tennessee, probate court, alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who took Oher into their home as a high school student, never adopted him. Instead, less than three months after Oher turned 18 in 2004, the petition says, the couple tricked him into signing a document making them his conservators, which gave them legal authority to make business deals in his name.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL SATURDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – MATT RHULE:

RHULE – ZAVIER BETTS HAS DEPARTED THE PROGRAM

Huskers Head Coach Matt Rhule informed the media that Wide Receiver Zavier Betts left the team after Saturday’s Practice.

Betts played in 18 games in 2020 and 2021, starting six of them, but left the team in 2022 before being welcomed back by the new coaching staff.

RHULE – DEFENSE “DOMINATED” IN SCRIMMAGE

Nebraska Football held their second scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Stadium, and the defense dominated, according to head coach Matt Rhule

The Blackshirts are changing schemes to Tony White’s 3-3-5 for the upcoming season.

RHULE – YOUNG WR NEEDS TO STEP UP

Matt Rhule was asked after Saturday’s practice what offensive unit had the most questions after the second scrimmage at Memorial Stadium

Young Leadership in the Wide Reciever room was magnified after the announcement of Zavier Betts, who caught 20 passes for 286 yards in the 2021 season.

FORMER UNK BASEBALL COACH DAY TO COACH OMAHA SKUTT CATHOLIC

Damon Day, who led UNK Baseball for the final fifteen seasons in program history, has a new home.

Omaha Skutt Catholic announced the hiring of Day in a Friday evening press release.

Day led UNK Baseball to 394 wins,  two RMAC titles and 4 NCAA tournament appearances before the program’s elimination in 2018. Since that time, he has been the founder and lead instructor for the Central Nebraska Baseball Academy.

The Skutt Skyhawks went 14-12 last season.

LOPER WOMEN’S SOCCER PICKED ELEVENTH IN MIAA POLL, FALL CAMP STARTS TODAY:
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its Preseason Coaches’ Poll for the 2023 women’s soccer season.

UNK tallied 22 total points finishing eleventh in the preseason poll, ahead of Newman but behind Missouri Southern.

Central Missouri, the defending MIAA champion, was picked to finish at the top of the league again. UCM has won 13 of the last 15 regular season titles including the last three.

UNK begins fall camp on Monday, Aug. 14. The Lopers will work out twice daily (9:30-11 a.m. & 5:30-7 p.m.) before school begins on Aug. 21. The team hosts Hastings (Aug. 20; 3 p.m.) and Augustana (Aug. 26; 12 p.m.) in home exhibition scrimmages before the regular season starts on Sept. 2 in Oklahoma.
