GRAND ISLAND — A 15- and 16-year-old were cited for criminal mischief after intentionally setting fire to the playground set at Newell Elementary School during the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 23.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, around 5:31 p.m., officers responded to Newell Elementary, 2700 W. 13th St., to assist with a call that was dispatched as an unknown fire but turned out to have engulfed the playground set.
Members of the Grand Island Fire Department had to respond to the blaze when the heat index was reaching 105.
It was discovered that a fire had been intentionally set and caused the destruction of the entire playground set.
There were no injuries and no damage to the school, according to the Grand Island Fire Department.
Two juvenile males were identified and cited for criminal mischief.
