KEARNEY — The Kearney Community Theatre will be performing “Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood,”

“Packed with thrills, romance, laughter, and immortal characters like Little John, Friar Tuck, and Maid Marian, ‘Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood’ tells the enduring story of a hero of the people who takes on the ruthless powers that be,” according to the Kearney Community Theatre website.

“You’ll find a little Errol Flynn, a little Mel Brooks, and even a little Monty Python in this romp full of arrows and romance. But it’s also a moving tale of a young man’s discovery that everyone has a responsibility to care of his fellow man,” per the Kearney Community Theatre.

The KCT highlighted several of the cast members performing in the show.

“Brandon Brindamour (Robin Hood), a senior at UNK, was interested in this show because he likes the classic tale and has done archery since he was a child,” per the KCT.

“LauraKate Carlock (Maid Marian) is a newcomer to our stage and is very excited to be here since she has not performed since high school! LauraKate is a Behavioral Health Provider at UNK,” the KCT stated.

Paul Bonk (Sir Guy of Gisbourne) has performed numerous times with KCT and has enjoyed playing the villain in this production.

“Jared Zwiener (Prince John/King Richard) is very excited to be on the KCT stage again after portraying Leaf Coneybear in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee last fall. Jared has been a fan of Robin Hood his whole life, has experience with archery, and enjoys the aspects of medieval times, so this is the perfect show for him,” per the KCT.

“A Social Studies teacher at West Kearney High School, Shaun D. Clark (Friar Tuck) is thrilled to be on stage again. He grew up watching Disney’s Robin Hood so he is excited to be a part of this production,” the KCT stated.

“Excited to be part of this reimagined classic tale is Dale Steinhauser (Sheriff of Nottingham). He is a Senior Systems Technician at Builders Warehouse, though he mentions “being a grandpa” as his favorite job,” per the KCT.

“William Frederick (Little John) states his favorite part of this show is the physical dynamics and action – especially compared to his “sitting” last role, Vice Principal Doug Panch in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” states KCT.

The play is being directed by Alex Schwarz.

Schwarz said the show features the traditional Robin Hood story and follows him as he starts off as a naïve kid and grows into the hero who fights the royalty and steals from the rich to give to the poor, which everyone recognizes.

This show is different from others KCT has put on in the past and includes drama, romance and a healthy dash of meta-humor, pulling inspiration from the 1938 film, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and the 1993 movie, “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”

Schwarz also got to fulfill a goal of his: choreographing not one but three sword fights and a quarter staff fight for this performance. “These should be fun for the audience,” he said.

“KCT is focused on high quality shows and that should be obvious with this one,” Schwarz said.

There will be eight performances of the show, Thursdays-Saturdays, October 5-7 and 12-14 at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays, October 8 and 15 at 2:30 p.m.

The play is by Ken Ludwing and features a comedic spin on the traditional Robin Hood tale, it was developed and originally produced at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, Calif.

The Kearney Community Theatre is located on 83 Plaza Boulevard.
