Three brief, weak tornadoes occurred in central Nebraska on Oct. 3

OVERTON — Three brief and weak tornadoes occurred amid the thunderstorms that impacted south central Nebraska on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

“All three were spawned from the same supercell as it moved northeast across Dawson, Buffalo and Sherman counties,” per the National Weather Service – Hastings.

A short-lived tornado occurred about three miles east of Overton.

“This tornado upset at least two center irrigation pivots, and the associated rear flank downdraft damaged three more pivots. One farmstead reported tree damage. The tornado likely dissipated in a pasture after a couple minutes,” per NWS Hastings.

This tornado was rated EF-0, with peak winds of 80 mph. It had a path length of 1.34 miles and maximum width of 50 yards.

The second tornado occurred east of Hazard.

“Damage at a farmstead included damage to gutters and fascia on the west side of the home, and significant damage to a large tree on the property. Leaves and debris were smattered on the east side of the house. Minor tree occurred as the tornado moved, but the tornado apparently quickly lifted in a nearby field,” NWS Hastings stated.

This tornado was also rated EF-0, with winds up to 75 mph. Its path was 0.6 miles long with a width of 25 yards.

The last tornado of the night occurred on the south side of Rockville, along Highway 68.

“Based upon video, the tornado lasted less than five seconds as it caused some minor damage in the area,” NWS Hastings noted.

This twister was also rated EF-0, with estimated peak winds of 75 mph. Its path length only included a brief touchdown, and the maximum winds was 25 yards.
