PALO ALTO, CALIF. – The Stanford Cardinal won the first six matches to down Nebraska Kearney, 35-9, Sunday afternoon in Palo Alto, Calif.The Lopers, ranked 18th in NCAA Division II, beat San Francisco State on Saturday and are now 1-2 on the young season. They host the annual Younes Hospitality Open next Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.
Tenth-ranked Crew Howard (Clarinda, Ia.) had UNK’s lone win on the match as he took care of senior Peter Ming by a 6-3 score. He scored the last six points via a takedown and penalty point in the third period, first-period escape and riding time.Next, 10th-ranked Trenton Munoz (Santa Clarita, Calif.) returned home and won by forfeit at 174 pounds with nationally-ranked Nick James (141 lbs.) and John Burger (149 lbs.) suffering close setbacks. James lost by a 19-14 count as fifth-year senior Jackson Disario erased a 3-0 lead with nine first period points. He added two more takedowns and riding time to hold off James who had four reversals. One weight higher, seventh-ranked redshirt senior Jaden Abas got out to a 3-0 lead and then added two escapes and riding time to win, 6-5. Burger tied things at four with a second period takedown and tied things again the third thanks to an escape, but it wasn’t enough.Also on Saturday in Mitchell, S.D., some young Lopers took part in the annual Dakota Wesleyan Open. Winning their respective weight class was true freshman Brady Collins (149 lbs.) and Alex Munoz (184 lbs.) with true freshman Cael Robb (165 lbs.) second and two others finishing sixth.
