Hastings College Women's Basketball // HC Bronco Athletics
JAMESTOWN, ND – The Hastings College women’s basketball team got off to a nice start against Jamestown only to go cold in the second half as Jamestown pulled away for the 75-53 win on Friday evening inside the Harold Newman Arena.
The Lady Broncos were able to open up a slim lead in the first quarter as Rachel Gooden picked up an early bucket plus a couple of free throws while Lexi Kraft buried two threes along with points from Tathis Arredondo and a jumper from Alex Tapia as HC had an early 11-6 lead over the Jimmies.
Hastings would go cold at the end of the first quarter as Jamestown took the lead but it would be a late jumper from Miriam Miller as Hastings took a 17-16 lead into the second quarter.
The teams then battled for the rest of the first half as Hastings would hold on to a slim 35-32 lead at the break.
Hastings would come out quickly in the third as Mariyah Avila drained a three and came back with a jumper following a bucket from Jamestown as HC led 40-34 with 7:34 to go in the third.
Jamestown quickly tied the game at 42 and then the wheels began to fall off for the Lady Broncos as Jamestown would pull away for the 22-point victory.
After Hastings held the 35-32 lead at halftime, Jamestown would outscore Hastings 43-to-18 in the second half to come away with the victory.
Hastings finished the game shooting 34.4 percent (21-for-61) while Jamestown finished the game shooting 47.5 percent (28-for-59). Three pointers were a big difference as Hastings hit just 4-of-21 while the Jimmies connected on 9-of-17.
Avila led the way for HC with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Gooden finished with eight points all of which came in the first half. Kraft added seven points while Kiernan Paulk ended up with six points.
Hastings is now 2-3 (0-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Nov. 18 hitting the road to take on Dakota Wesleyan with tipoff set for 1:00 pm inside the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.
