Hastings College Women's Basketball // HC Broncos Athletics

The Hastings College women’s basketball team was in a battle with Midland into the third quarter but the Lady Broncos were able to lock down defensively and pull away for the 81-62 victory on Tuesday evening inside Lynn Farrell Arena.

Hastings clung to a three point lead at 45-42 with 3:38 to go in the third when Alexis Tapia got free on the low block for the layup. Midland picked up a free throw but Rachel Goodon countered by getting fouled at the rim and made both free throws to make it 49-43.

Then Goodon got around her defender for the steal which led to the easy Mariyah Avila layup to make it an eight point game with 2:00 to go in the third.

After the teams traded points, Riley Clavel worked the ball to Miriam Miller as she got the and one to go plus the free throw as Hastings had built its largest lead at 56-46 with 1:02 left in the third. After a good defensive stand, Miller returned the favor finding a wide open Avila in the corner as she buried the three as Hastings would eventually take a 62-46 lead into the fourth quarter.

From there the lead just ballooned as the Lady Broncos pulled away for the 81-62 victory.

Hastings finished the game shooting 40.6 percent (28-for-69) from the floor while the Warriors shot just 38.7 percent (24-for-62). 3-point shooting was tough to come by as Midland was just 1-for-14 with Hastings connecting on 6-of-23 attempts. Rebounds were pretty even with HC holding the slight 42-to-40 edge but it was points off turnover that was a major difference as Hastings scored 24 compared to just 10 for MU.

Goodon had a career night scoring a career high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting while also finishing with a double-double pulling down a career high 11 boards. Goodon also had four steals and four blocks. Avila added 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Miller added nine key points off the bench while Kiernan Paulk finished with nine and Lexi Kraft added eight against her former team.

Hastings committed just 10 turnovers while turning Midland over 18 times.

Hastings improves to 3-4 (1-2) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Nov. 29 as Doane comes to town with tipoff set for 6:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
