KEARNEY — The Nebraska Unicameral passed LB77, constitutional carry, in April of 2023. This bill became law when Governor Jim Pillen signed it and became active this Fall. LB 77 provides for carrying concealed handguns without a permit, changes provisions relating to concealed weapons, and prohibits certain regulation of weapons by cities, villages, and counties.
Lincoln and Omaha City Councils have both recently enacted specific resolutions which will be challenged for constitutionality. Additional efforts from the gun lobby in the state will ensure that the people’s voice is heard as well as our constitutional right to Bear Arms is not infringed.
The manner in which the Kearney City Council passed an ordinance (resolution 2023-149) earlier this month showed foul play as two members of the council were not present when this was introduced and voted on. The Citizens of Kearney and surrounding areas rose up and vocally opposed the action. Through various network channels, members of the Republican Party of Nebraska and like-minded coalitions worked across the state to find 2A experts, social media influencers and public relations experts to voice the view of We, the People.
Dan Moos, NEGOP Committeeman from Hall/Buffalo County reached out to other State Central Committee members and connected local and national experts on this type of overreach by local governments. Throughout the state individuals worked to generate messages to have the people show up, write letters and contact their representatives.
Buffalo County GOP representatives Joe Maul, Kirby Wilson and others showed up in force to hold their elected officials accountable and follow the law.
Yesterday’s council vote of 3 to 2, rescinded the vote from October 10th which would have allowed signage to prevent open carry of handguns anywhere they deemed. This effort shows the ability of the people to make a difference in their community and be the salvation of the state by their watchfulness.
