KEARNEY — Two drivers were transported to the hospital following an accident near the intersection of Highway 10 and Coal Chute Road, east of Kearney, during the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Around 10:55 a.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection for the report of a two-vehicle accident and that one of the subjects was trapped.

On scene, a green Pontiac car with heavy passenger side damage had come to rest facing west in the south ditch of Coal Chute Rd.

A white Chevrolet pickup was laying on its passenger side, with front end damage and was partially blocking one of the lanes of Coal Chute Rd.

KVFD Deputy Fire Chief Jason Whalen said that 12 firefighters in total responded to the scene and they assisted with evaluating the scene, as well as helping to remove both drivers from their vehicles.

Both drivers were transported to the hospital via CHI Health Good Samaritan ambulance.

Whalen said the driver of the pickup was trapped and needed help getting out of the vehicle, they had suffered minor injuries, while the Pontiac driver had more significant injuries.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.

The KVFD was assisted on scene by CHI Health Good Samaritan EMS personnel and the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office.
