NEBRASKA — As the calendar has turned over to 2024, several new laws go into effect in Nebraska.
Minimum Wage
Nebraska’s minimum wage increased to $12 per hour on Jan. 1, 2024.
“In accordance with an initiative passed by voters in November of 2022, the minimum wage will increase $1.50 each year through 2026, followed by an annual cost of living increase beginning in 2027. The minimum hourly wage for tipped employees is $2.13 per hour,” per the Nebraska Department of Labor.
Motorcycle Helmets
LB 138 changed motorcycle helmet usage in the state.
Motorcyclists above the age of 21 and have completed a Nebraska Department of Transportation approved safety course can choose whether to wear a helmet or not, but protective eyewear is still necessary.
Riders under 21 are required to wear a helmet. Disobeying the law is now a second-hand offense.
Postpartum Coverage
Medicaid postpartum coverage for mothers has been extended from 60 days to 12 months.
“This change will ensure that nearly five thousand mothers across the state will maintain access to a
comprehensive range of behavioral and physical health services, as well as additional support,” per the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services
“Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, all children found newly eligible for Medicaid will receive 12 months of continuous eligibility, regardless of changes to the child’s circumstance. If they are still eligible, they will receive an additional 12 months of continuous eligibility at the time of their renewal,” DHHS stated.
