GRAND ISLAND — The Grand Island Police Department is investigating criminal mischief at the Conestoga Mall construction site after unauthorized excavator caused $10,000 in damage.

According to police, on Friday, Dec. 29 at 7:16 p.m., officers responded to the site, at 3404 W. 13th St., for the report of criminal mischief.

Captain Dean Elliott said an unknown party gained access to the construction site and had the know-how to gain access to and start the excavator. It was used to cause $10,000 in damage to a wall south of Best Buy.

There are no suspects at this time, Elliot said officers checked cameras at Best Buy, but were not pointed in the direction of the damaged wall.

The case is still open and under investigation.
