KEARNEY — Dave Brandt, currently serving on the Kearney Public Schools Board of Education, will soon join Kearney High School as a science teacher. Brandt, a board member since 2020 and whose term was set to conclude in 2024, must resign from his board position because his new teaching role will begin in August 2024. His successor will complete the remainder of his term.

Brandt expressed his eagerness to return to teaching, stating, “I’ve greatly missed the classroom and teaching science. While I’ve valued my time on the Board, I believe I can make a more direct impact on education at Kearney High School.”

The school board, following policy, will now initiate the process of finding Brandt’s replacement. KPS Superintendent Jason Mundorf commented, “Dave has been an invaluable asset to the board. He has been a strong supporter of students and the improvement of our district in many facets. We are sad to lose his wisdom on the board but are thrilled to welcome his expertise to our KHS science faculty. Dave is a veteran educator who will do a terrific job of teaching our students, and we are excited to have him join Kearney High School”.

Steve Gaasch, the new KPS Board President, announced that the Board will conduct a Special Meeting of the Board on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 5:30 in the 2nd Floor Conference room of the KPS Administration Building. The special meeting will consist of an agenda to formally approve Dave Brandt as a teacher in KPS, to formally accept his resignation from the Board, and to discuss any procedures or processes for naming Brandt’s board replacement. By legal statute, the KPS Board has a 45-day window to appoint Brandt’s successor with the full autonomy of choosing a method, process, and candidate they feel will be a good fit on the Board, both short and long-term.

Outside of his board duties, Brandt is a co-owner of ABC Pharmacy and participates in community activities, including Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, and youth sports coaching. Brandt holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Science Education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, a Master’s in Education Administration from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and an Education Specialist certificate from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He previously taught science at Ralston High School and Millard North High School before moving to Kearney.
