KEARNEY — The 100th Bombardment Group, which is featured in the new Apple TV+ series, “Masters of the Air,” was based at the Kearney Army Airfield.

“Masters of the Air,” is a new war drama miniseries developed for Apple TV+ and is based off of the 2007 book “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought The Air War Against Nazi Germany,” by Donald Miller.

The series follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group, a unit which flew B-17 Flying Fortress with the Eighth Air Force during World War II. They earned the nickname the “Bloody Hundredth,” due the heavy losses they sustained through combat missions over Europe.

“Masters of the Air,” premiered on Apple TV+ on Jan. 26, 2024.

The 100th Bomb Group crews trained at the Kearney Army Airfield in 1943 before flying the North Atlantic route to England and the air war over Nazi occupied Europe.

“Masters of the Air,” is intended to serve as a companion series to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010).

A full article about the 100th Bomb Group, their training in Kearney and how they earned the nicknamed, “Bloody Hundredth” will be coming from Central Nebraska Today.com next week.
